Daguerreotype simulation

I'm not getting much feedback from fredmiranda.com's b/w forum, so I would like any of your help. I'm trying to simulate the Daguerreotype b/w photos of yester-year. Below is my process that I came up with; see attached images for reference:

I have never seen a Daguerreotype up close, but I can imagine how one must look like given that a Daguerreotype is etched on a silver plate. Here is how I created this version:

First of all, as you can see from the original, I had to enhance the low light areas of the color image before even starting the process; not going to explain this step since everyone has their own way of doing so. Afterwards, I converted the results to greyscale using Unplugged colors weighed greyscale filter. I then duplicated the layer and used Toadies Metalwork filter to give it the shimer, I believe, that is necessary to simulate the silver plate. I adjusted the opacity (I'm using GIMP) to 15 and merged all layers. I then duplicated the resulting layer and used xero's artworx filter fine lines selection to simulate etching. You must see the full resolution image to appreciate the details. After click on the rendered image, hover your mouse cursor over the lower right-hand side and wait for the maximize button to appear. Click on it, and the image will show up in full resolution.

Anyway, if any of you have tried to simulate Daguerreotype B/W images, please post here using the original photo (complements of my brother who acquired these images while he was in Afghanistan) so that we can compare.
