DIY Macrophotography ring light

Just thinking out loud here... Will shortly be aquiring a sigma 105MM ex macrolens and I gather one obvious problem with macrophotography is lighting. Have seen you can get ring flashes for this at enormous expense.

I like trying to come up with cheap alternatives for things, so has anyone tried making a ring light out of white LEDS?

I just happen to have a christmas decoration light chain with 15 of these lights which happen to be pretty bright and directed via a small built in light guide. Was thinking maybe I could form some of these LEDS into a ring to fit near the end of the lens - turn them on and shoot.
Any thoughts ?
Would be even better if turning the lights on triggered the shutter!
