What would the expected price be, if you could find one, for this lens. What would be YOUR maximum price be, for this lens?

They usually sell between $130 and $150 on the used market. I'm satisfied with my 50 MkII (used, $50).

$145 is the average I see on eBay

I got one off eBay for $80 as the guy thought it was broken. From the way he described it I thought it was his camera. But it turns out the aperature was sticking. Canon repaired it for $70 so I ended up paying waht everyone else pays for one.

However, my first 50mm was a MK II and it broke after a year. The front of the lens came off and the glass elements, etc, were falling out. I think it's well worth the investment for a well-build lens. And it's still half the price of the f/1.4.

I'm a bit stunned, not having followed used lens prices, that my 50/1.8 (originallky purchased in 1987) would now be worth more than I paid for it!!

Won't get me to give it up though...

BTW, is anyone aware of where I can find a comparison of the OPTICAL performance. I can certainly see that the build quality is much better.

Sorry,
Paul

The MkI is sharper when compared wide open. There's a comparison on Petteri's site... about 3/4 down the page:

But how much would it be in 1987 dollars? A dollar went a lot farther those days :)

There is quite a bit of variation between copies of the same lens, particularly the rock-bottom cheap lens like the 50/1.8, as Petteri himself noted in recent posts. A number of people who owned both versions said they saw no difference optically.

LOL. Need to calculate the Net Present Value!

For me, I'm happy if it can even just maintain it's price. The value of most electronic goods halve every 12 months.

$145 shipped in the US. I'll setup a private e-bay auction if your interested. The lens is in perfect working and physical order. I'll included a 52mm UV, 52mm Circular Polarizer, and 52mm Hoya Lens Hood with Cap. I don't have any of the manuals or box. The focus is a bit noisy, not knowing if it's above the normal level for this lens, I recorded a MP3 of it. http://myweb.cableone.net/sracer2000/5018.mp3 I got this lens from a local shop when it closed because a itz amera came in to the mall. (don't get me started on them) Anything else you wanna know just post it. :)

I'm only getting rid of it because I can use a 85 more than a 50. So I'm saving up.

Well Misha,

I had thought of that when I posted but I recall paying something around $70 - $75 so I doubt the $ has fallen by a factor of 2 - or did it?

On the other hand, I was a graduate student then so a $ was worth much more to me than it is today - I just had fewer of them.
