PBASE is dying so where should I move to?

I do like the format - way better looking to browse than Smugmug IMHO - and there are so many people that have my PBase address and enjoy my pictures... more than I even know of, as I'm finding out regularly. So, I'm staying the course for the foreseeable future unless things worsen significantly. I renew in May, I think, so there's no rush to make a decision before then, anyway.

I was astounded by the quality of the old "free" pbase.
I donated out of gratitude and was glad when they went to a pay service.

I think pBase may be the Krispy Kreme of photosites.
A company with a great product that's grown too fast.

I am sticking it out for now, out of loyalty for what slug provided
way back when.

Hope things straighten out.

I tried to hot link an image from Imagestation the other night (Eiffel Tower), but I failed.

The first time I previewed it, it seems it worked. But when I finally posted, the image won't show.
So yes, they're still not allowing images to be link.

Oh well.

Teddy: Here's two more I just hot linked. Don't see any problem.

They each have their pros and cons. While I'm very much a fan of Smugmug and never have been too keen on pbase, I feel that both of them serve a huge need and do it better than most other services available. Glitches happen, and I'm sure Slug will find his way past the current ones. With growth comes some growing pains. I think it's to be applauded when folks can give him some time and a chance to straighten out the problems. It won't happen overnight.

U;y: Yep, you're correct, was viewing in Firefox and switched over to IE where they wouldn't be in the cache and they're not there. Those rats..........

Gary
You may be seeing it if it's already in your browser cache. But I
used to get people all the time who were upset because I was
linking to ImageStation pictures but not showing up.
Uly:
Here's a hot link from ImageStation. I must be working.

with ImageStation. These are coming up for me now (at first viewing) in both Firefox and IE.

This is partly what I remember from last time I tried to grapple with ImageStation -- accessibility being so hit-and-miss. The other thing was its speed, compared with which glacier watching had more spice as a spectator sport. At least that aspect seems to be better now... when it works! ;-)

Curiously, I've never had a problem with hot linking per se to ImageStation. Maybe the restriction came and went while I was looking elsewhere...
Sorry... That image isn't coming up for me, Gary.

During December PBASE took a flying leap off of a cliff and hasn't
been brought back to life. I am looking for a new provider for my
pics. I have heard smug is good but does anyone have any
suggestions?

-Danny

PS If you don't know what I am talking about check out the forums
(Q&A) at PBASE for an explination. I am very sad to see what
happened to them and how everyone is leaving so fast. It was a
great site until last month :(
I can understand everyone saying that it is "growing pains" that is causing the problems with Pbase - but come on - there are other photo hosting sites that have grown at a similar clip and do not struggle nearly as much as Pbase seems to every time a spurt hits. Seems to be that other photo hosters seem to plan ahead a bit better for future growth. I don't want to have my photos hosted somewhere that will have a period like this one every time a new plateau of membership is reached.

The lack of communication is also disheartening to many - even a quick post on the Pbase forums during times like this would go miles with some of these frustrated people.

Hi - (Mr/Ms) Bauerman

Where did you get your figures about the growth rate of other photo sites?

My information does not show that others have had pBase-like growth rates.
I would be curious to know which sites you mean.

I am not excusing pBase, I am just looking for a baseline.

You're right Mike, after a little wait, they finally go come up. I really haven't used Image Station at all for quite some time and even though I went to DSL, it is slooooow.
Thanks, Gary
