I just saw the FL 36 flash advertised on E bay, bought one through buy it now for $199. Looks like a good alternative to the FL 50, should get it by the end of the week and will report back.

You wouldn't mind sharing the auction number with us would you? I would love to see the how it was posted and by whom. Thanks, Jim

Hopefully it is an honest auction. When I was buying my E1, the Olympus rep happened to be in the store, and let me play with the FL-36 and 40-150 lens, though I was mostly playing with the camera. The rep indicated that the FL-36 wouldn't be showing up in retail stores for another 4 weeks......

Hi Jim , I did a quick search on e-bay , there is and has been only the one dealer selling these: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=48515&item=3864113726&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

You can check out the other items they sell ... E-300 among them for $895 w/14-45 lens. They claim to be an authorized dealer . ... there seems to be different names to the comapny . ... Camera Universe and Audio Video Express . Read the whole ad and you'll see . Ever heard of them ?
-Best wishes, Garth Raber

The Ebay auction number is #3864113726, he had 3 listed originally, 2 left right now. He has a good feedback rating so I will keep you guys posted.

Had a lot of fun with my E-300/FL-36 combo this evening. Great value for money...

Are these turning up yet?

I wrote the eBay'er and he replied today and said they were in stock.

I think in the next 7-10 days a lot of FL-36 will be for sale all over the next,, Olympus is shipping them to dealers... $199.00 is a FAIR PRICE, they list for $250.00

Depends on what camera you have. FL-40 works well with C-5050Z (and if I am not mistaken, the C-8080 and some other Oly P&S digicams), Auto TTL works with no problem with those cameras. It has some compatibility issues with E-300 and E-1. I don't think FL-40 is still being produced (is discontinued). The FL-36 is so new, I have not heard how well it works with other Oly digicams.
What would be worth for US$200...FL-40 or FL36??

From the specs, the FL-36 would win since it has FP fast mode that allows you to do fill flash above 1/180 second (at a cost of reduced range). On the other hand, the FL-40 possibly might be faster at recharging since it has 4 batteries compared to 2 of the FL-36. The FL-40 does have a little bit more range as well.

fl36 has new circuitry that allows for fast charging even w 2 AA batteries...don't have real life hands on experience w it but it seems like an excellent flash specswise ;-))...i 'll end up getting it for the E1 when it's available...currently i'm using the FL20 for fill in and the canon 550EX for more serious flash shoots...manually resetting the power is no fun, i 'll need a full fledge TTL flash soon ;-))

I've done a lot of head scratching (got fleas) and soul searching (I lost mine last thursday) - see previous thread of mine re FL36 v FL50

While the 36 looks nice and is a great price compared to Oly's normal extortionate ones, in the end I bit the bullet (I have a lead craving) and went FL50.

This fast charging circuit. Hmmmmm (I'm a humming bird on my off days) I'd like somebody to explain to me exactly what this is. I'm not convinced its much more that advertising bulsh.

Interesting to note that the FL50 apparently had problems with some batteries not being able to supply enough current to it. If this is the case, I'm curious how the FL36 is going to manage this additional 'fast charge' using only 2 batts. Maybe it sucks additional electrons from the air or something?

My FL-36 flash arrived today! Just got home so I only had about 5 minutes to try it out, all I can say is WOW!!!! The way it works with the E-300 is amazing, flash recovery time is one second, flash zoom works with the lens as you zoom in and out so does the flash, rear LCD has lots of information... I have a FL-40 for my C-5060 to try out, but this does Blow away my FL-40, C-5060 combo... BTW, The IR illuminator is so large and so powerful, I can take pictures in total darkness, and see everything through the viewfinder. The IR illuminates an area almost 2.5 feet across, yes 2.5 feet, almost 10" vertical.... The AF is almost instantaneous!! The FL-36 ROCKS!!!
