I should have mentioned that my slaves are out of easy reach. They
are about 14 feet high, and I use a light switch to turn power on
and off. So, I would prefer not to use batteries.

I suggest you replace the Sunpak 383 with a small, AC powered monolight such as the MediaLight PG 3001ML. I have bought several of these over the years, and they are perfect for use as a hairlight, kicker light, background light, etc. I use Alien Bees monolights also, and the PG 3001ML is much more compact in size. It has about the same amount of maximum brightness as a Sunpak 383, and the brightness can be reduced to 1/2 and 1/4 power settings. In full power mode, it recycles in about 3 seconds - faster at the reduced power settings. It has a 40 watt modeling light, built-in optical slave, and built-in mounting bracket. It costs about $120 at B&H Photo: ;jsessionid=B7GSwX5wBJ!-1637784609?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=176340&is=REG
