That thought had occured to me as well. If you can capture so mudh dynamic range in a RAW, then the CCD must be picking up this range, too. If that's the case, why can't there be an in-camera option to "preserve maximum dynamic range" via an ultra-low-contrast setting while writing to a JPEG? That would be a VERY handy tool to have!
