My understanding is that when the G1 is switched to manual, it tells the external flash via the dedication signals to fire at full power. This is how the built-in flash works too.

Why they do that is really beyond me. It would be much more useful if it would just do E-TTL so you could shoot at a given f/stop without having to use Av and be in "fill-flash" mode.
