Does anyone use media markers to write on cd/dvd-rs for archiving? I recently bought Verbatim Multi-Media Marker (odourless, water-based solvent-free pigment ink) but haven't tried yet. I'm still a bit skeptical about the safety... Also any great ideas for archiving? Any comments appreciated!

With DVDs the recording layer is laminated in polycarbonate so you can use whatever you want to write on it with, including paper labels.

A CD has its recording layer on top of the polycarbonate substrate, and just below the label and laquer layer. The trick there is not to press hard with a writing instrument. I just use a Sharpie pen... easy to use easy to read.

You should never stick anything on to a disc as it could affect the balance of it when spinning in the drive. In the worst case it could trash your drive!

All the best

I agree. don't use labels. I used labels for a short period several years ago and many of the disks started to peel within the year. Never ruined any drives, but then again I haven't heard from any of my clients that I submitted reprots on CDR with the photo labels stuck on. If you want something better than the markers, get a new inkjet printer that prints on cd/dvd disks.

Thanks for all the comments. Sounds like the media markers should work fine :) I never use lables either.
