1Ds MkII Black'n'white

... they all take a color image, period. The chips are set up with permanent color filters attached. Some have an in-camera B&W mode, however ... but not the Canon DSLRs.
You get more control of the process doing it after the fact, in any case.

Surely the limitation isnt in the theory. I understand that the response in the highlights and dark areas of modern digital sensors is very different from that of film, but I am certain that this is only a matter of time until such sensors and software come to life. Maybe R&D is too dependent on market needs and everyone seems to want MPs, low noise and dynamic range but I m sure that many professionals would embrace a speciality product made for their needs. I ll stop my general rant and hope that these days will come sooner than later.

'The Northern star, will bring the starry night, but before the sail appears through the pelagos. I ll become wave and fire to embrace you foreign land. And you my lost homeland, a tender stroke and a scar, once the sun rises in another land. Now I fly for my life's celebration. The same old moon and you newly met birds, push the sun and day away from the mountain to see me cross the sky like a lightning. ' Nikos Gatsos

Maybe I don't undertsand the question - if so then I apologize for my answer because I'm missing something.

Anyway, it's very easy to shoot in black and white with a digital camera. For example I took the following picture with my 1DMkII:

The key is to take the file and process it with a program like Photoshop to turn it into a B&W image. There are many ways to do this and the control you have is virtually limitless. It's a little like being able to put any filter on your lens after you take the picture.

The problem is when shooting an editorial on location I'm with an art director who wishes the shoot in black and white for magazine publication and like shooting film we use a b&w polaroid to get the full impact of what the shoot will look like with out the guess work of "this is in colour and can be converted later". Art directors can be pretty awkward sometimes and can only understand what you show them. Its a pity the 1Ds MkII doesn't have b&w as it would have been the iceing on the cake.

Not exactly accurate.

The 1Ds MkII does not. The 20D, however, does do in-camera grayscale conversion and also emulatges several B&W filter effects.

... and though I'm gonna get a 20D for macro and other stuff, I don't think I'll use that mode ... I love the control I get otherwise. But maybe the Canon algorithm geeks have gotten it right ...

Why don't you tether to a laptop and then have an assistant desaturate the pics on the fly to show that art director. If you don't want to tether, you can swap CF cards liek you swap film backs and upload to a decent laptop and then show the b & w pics.

I don't see the big deal with it. These art directors are going to have to move into the 21st century some time soon!

to replace my D60.....but I have to get the 1DsMk II first to replace my first generation 1Ds. Canon and their naming system is baffling at best. I think maybe the naming committee is smoking something in the back room when they come up with these model numbers. Shouldn't there have been a MK I before a MK II. And then they come out with a D30 followed by a D60.....so far logical, but then replace that with a D10 and then a D20??? I suppose the replacement for the D20 will be the D80.

And of course Nikon had to come out with a D70 to confuse the uninitiated even further.

FWIW:

Kodak made both a digital B&W and an infared versions of their 460.
To my knowledge, these are the only two true B&W digital cameras.

Also, to make digital photos look more like traditional photos it helps shooting RAW and not getting carried away with unsharp masking or any other sharpening. Those little black or white lines around details are a dead give away of a digital workflow as is the JPEG compression death to tonal transitions. Working in LAB color space helps keep things smoother.

Don't be so hard on art directors. The best know the look they're after. They'll pay good money to photographers who can give it to them.
