Why does canon have such a large range compared to Nikon?

Hi guys, forgive me if this sounds outright stupid, I just bought my first digital SLR, D70 and I am loving it to death, I was shooting Minolta Dimage 7 before that and the D70 seems lightyears ahead in every respect. and so easy to use.

I have noticed, (correct me if I am wrong) that Canon not only have a much larger range of lenses, but in some respects better optics that they keep up to date, while Nikon, one has to go out and get an old 70-210 5.6D second hand because Nikon stoped making these and replaced it with a new and inferior 70-300 lens. This is just one example, looking through these forums it seems that a lot of the older lenses are perfectably usable in the new cameras and they would be top notch if only nikon updated their electronics.

Or have I got this whole thing back to front?
