I suspect there is a testing process based on a statistical sampling. The cost of this quality assurance process is offset by being able to sell at a lower price, rather than throw away, the batch of devices that did not meet the grade A standard. Of course, this is where you hope that statistically the test samples indicated a sub-standard batch, but the camera you bought (with the B or C grade sensor) has a perfect sensor!!
