I just got PS CS so am definitely a beginner. So what book would
you suggest for someone like me to learn masking, etc.? I do have
Scott Kelby's Photoshop for Digital Photographers which I like very
much but want to take it one step further with manipulation, etc.

If you are a real beginner, I suggest the 24 One Hour lessons
book by Carla Rose. That is what I started with and was very happy
with it. A step further is Adobe's Classroom in a Book. Once you
get past those. try Martin Evening's Adobe Photoshop CS For
Photographers and Katrin's Restoration and Retouching. and Bruce
Frasier's Photoshop CS and also his Camera RAW if you shoot RAW.
IMO the best writers are Eisman, Bruce Fraser, and Evening and Tim
Grey. You cannot go wrong reading their stuff. You also might
want to sign up for the Epson Academy web classes, especially if
you want to get into printing your own photos. I have found that I
have really learned a lot by printing my own photos. My original
attempts screamed out my editing errors! Read Tim Grey's Color
Confidence to learn printing. Go to Tim's website and sign up for
his free newsletter too. You will learn a lot.

Right now my big problem is spending so much time on sites such as this and others instead of doing stuff on P.S.
