Just for the record, it is possible to sync several flashes from a
PC outlet or a hot shoe, but that's irrelevant.

It IS relevant. It is relevant because there is no such thing as "standard" hot shoe. No one ever agreed on contact polarity. One flash can have positive voltage on its central pin, another one can supply negative voltage. Connect these two directly and the results will be unpredictable.

I agree that as long as you know what you are doing, it is possible to sync more then one flash from a hot shoe (or PC socket), but often it is not the case (i.e. rented equipment).

I agree that Canon screwed up but so what? There are ways around the problem, it's not the only and not even the most serious G1's fault.
