Canon’s attitude: what do you think?

Re: Need help from someone with a Canon flash and a G1

Actually I have. I bought the 550EX, thinking that if the E-TTL thing worked out wonderfully as many others said then may be I would shell out the money. What I found is E-TTL was only adequate (especially outdoor fill where bounce is not possible) and constantly have to revert to manual mode to get the quality I like. The G1 works with the 550EX perfectly fine in manual mode. But then I thought that if I was going to use it as a manual flash exclusively anyway then the $485 price tax wasn't at all justified. Had the G1 worked with third party flashes in manual mode as it's supposed to, a $69 Sunpak is every bit as good as the 550EX if not better. Needless to say, I returned the 550EX and had to deal with this.

Put your flash in manual mode. Then put the G1 in manual mode at
1/125 sec. Without making any changes to the flash take exposures
from f2 to f8. Then let me know if the exposures are consistent
with stopping down the lens. Thanks.
