It's not like that at all. When it comes to using a flash in manual mode there is a standard that has been around for decades. It's very simple. With the G1 it works in Av and Tv mode. And in manual mode it also triggers the flash, but the aperture doesn't work properly. It's like buying a Canon PC compatible computer (if they still make them) and saying that only Canon monitors, printers and floppy disk will work with the camera.

Canon, Nikon etc all have their own way of doing TTL and E-TTL. But they all follow the same standard when it comes to manual flash.
