You really have no idea what the G1 does. Distance, film speed and guide numbers are the basics of flash photography. That same simple concept works on every camera that I know of EXCEPT the G1. See Peter's post on studio light, it explains how the G1 screws up.

If you can't comprehend that, borrow a manual flash from someone, experiment with different appertures at typical shutter speed (e.g. 60 through 125) and you'll see exactly what I'm talking about.
