Can't argue with the DOF issue, but f2.8 does not get you the same low light performance. I get three extra stops using the IS, so a f4-f5.6 lens acts like a f1.4-f2 lens as far as low light goes.

I think the 18-50 is a superior lens from what I have seen.

The Image stabilizer is a nice feature for very slow shots, but
f2.8 is pretty helpful in its own way.
