Hey, Im new here, and im planning on choosing a camera for my upcoming birthday(Oct 22). Ive narrowed it down to these two, and I'll be mostly using it for far away shots. The only dislike I have is the S5100's incompatability with SM and CF I and II. Opinions are welcome, also other cameras i may like in the $300-400 usd range. Thanks

This is a tough one, but I think the s602 stilll has the edge on the s5100.

Plusses for s602:
The s602 has a sensor that is about twice the area of the one in the s5100.
The s602 has an external flash shoe.
The s602 has the edge on the continuous mode shooting.
The s602 takes CF cards.

The plusses for the s5100:
Longer zoom.
Focus assist light (very limited range).
I probably missed a few.

Now for my money, if you are going to buy a big memory card, the money you save getting a 512 or 1Gb CF instead of XD could almost buy you a TCON-17 for that extra zoom range.

However, I am biased - I have a s602 + TCON etc.

TRUE, but... do they even still MAKE the S602z ?!?!?!

I thought Fuji replaced that model with the S7000!

Can you still buy a new S602z ???

I haven't seen any for sale anywhere.

I think I would take an S7k over a 602 if the price was $400 for either.

Of course, you can get a S5100 cheaper than $400, so it might
be the better deal.
A 256mb xD card would be plenty, and those are going for $60.
( Which is not bad! )

People complain about the price of xD cards, but aren't they supposed
to be a bit faster than some of the other cards out there?
( I don't know, because I don't use SD or CF cards! )

I know some people don't like them, but XD cards are actually a very good format! Not only are they the smallest storage media available, but they also have the lowest power consumption and the fastest read speeds.

The WRITE speed of the XD card is rated at 1.3Mb/sec, which equals SmartMedia and is faster than CompactFlash (150k/sec) and SecureDigital (1.1Mb/sec). Only Sony's proprietary Memory Sticks can be written to faster, at a speed of 2.5Mb/sec.

The READ speed of the XD and SmartMedia cards are the fastest however, at 5.0Mb/sec. Memory Sticks are second fastest at 2.4Mb/sec, then SecureDigital at 1.3Mb/sec, and CompactFlash is slowest at 850k/sec.

XD and SmartMedia cards both have an incredibly low power consumption rate of 25mmW. Compact flash draws 150mmW, SecureDigital 122mmW, and Memory Sticks 148mmW.

Regards,

Rob.

You can still find the s602 in some stores up here in Canada. I bought a s602se (pro, black) from a Canadian online store that sells mainly to the States. Price was 429 USD with a 200 USD deferred rebate (plus an additonal 100 Can rebate from Fuji Canada if you are a Canadian purchaser). When I spoke to this store on the phone, they indicated that they expected to cotinue to get them in for the next while. You might want to check with Morris where he bought his, it was from another Canadian online retailer and price was reasonable.
While that was a couple of months ago, I was in London Drugs today and they had the regular s602 for 799 Can less the 100 Fuji Can rebate (the S7000 sells for 799 Can in this store - no rebate, the s5100 for 529 no rebate)
I've been very happy with my 602se

Cheers,
Randy

ok, well so far im leaning toward the S602, i looked up the SE on the internet, and i cant find any online retailers. if your allowed to post links, think ya could for me? I really like the idea that i can get the memory for much cheaper, even though the speeds may be a tad different. Also, my computer doesnt have a xD card reader, so would i need that, or could a USB port simply do the job? Thank you guys so much for you responses so far.

Stefan

A USB would do the job for uploading pix.

I checked the place I bought mine, Prodigital2000 (an ebay store who is associated with Carmans Foto Source at carmans.com), and they don't have any on their website currently. You can try calling them at 1-866-227-6267 ext 20. I did however find several listed on ebay (search as s602) not sure if any were the se model but some were new (not refurbished) and priced quite well. You might also try searching back in this forum for a thread that Morris started when he was looking for one as I think he indicated at the end of the thread where it was he ended up buying. As for the reader, I don't have one I simply hook up with the supplied USB cable.

Cheers,
Randy

I'll call them later, but do you know how much of a price difference it was between the s602 and the s602se(like 50$?). Im glad that I wouldnt need a xD card reader. I also checked on ebay, and i found one S602Z Pro, started at 250$. Ill keep looking.

Thanks,
Stefan

Wow, thanks for the informative STATS!

I appreciate your research.

As far as I know the se was a later release and the place I bought was only offering the se when I bought. When I was looking, everyone was selling one or the other. There didn't seem to be much difference in the price if any between the models. I think if you could get either for under 400 it would be a good deal (I won't know if my deferred rebate worked out until next June so my current price was 429 US less 100 Can (I have received that rebate from Fuji Can).

In addition to not using xD, I liked the fact that I can put a CF card and a SM card in the camera at the same time so no need to change cards until both are full.

I just found the S602Z for 295 with shipping, but its factory refurb. Should I trust it or go ahead and get a non refurb model from another website for a tad more? Ive decided to get a S602 or a S602 SE/Pro. Also, the S602 cant take xD right? Thanks for keeping up!

I just recently saw the Panasonic Lumix FZ10, and if its worth the 420$, then i might look into it. IF anyone has had any experience with it, then id like their opinions.

It takes SM and CF

Re: various ultra zoom cameras: they have much smaller CCDs than the
602. I think half the area. It is a disadvantage. Basically, it means
you have to shoot with lower ISOs.

You can still find new S602's if you look.

And there are plenty of used S602's around.

Speaking of which, I just bought an S7000 to replace my S602, and will be selling my S602. It's in mint condition, indistinguishable from new, not a scratch on it, works perfectly. Further, when I bought it I bought a 3-year transferrable extended warranty that still has 18 months left -- a longer warranty than a new camera. The camera will be sold "as new", in the origninal box with all accessories as originally included (cable, CD, manual, straps, lens caps, etc. .... it will truly be "as new"). I was going to put it on E-Bay, but if anyone is interested, contact me (watzman-at-neo-dot-rr-dot-com). It won't be actually available for about 2 weeks.

The S602 doesn't use xD cards. It uses either/both CF and Smartmedia, but not xD. Regardless, however, a USB cable can do the data transfer.
