Re: Windows XP -- digital camera/photo features

Chris --

The search feature in Windows XP (on the start menu) will also search against the textual information in the EXIF tags of images. So if you fill in the comments section, you will be able to search against this data. Anything more than this will have to be a wishlist item for later releases of the OS.

The layout engine in the photo printing wizard is not very sophisticated. The templates it prints are static, with only some on-the-fly decisions made. Adding a more flexible layout engine is something that will be considered for future releases.

Thanks for the feedback.

I'm currently using ULead's Photo Impact Album, which lets me add
any fields I need. My description fields often include historical
notes, names of people in the shots, etc. At some point, I expect
to add fields to track photo sales -- very handy to have all this
in a single "album", but Ulead doesn't give me access to the
internal database. I have to export the records as tab-delimited
text and then add them to a real database, to get SQL control. I
just thought you folks might want to add some Jet database
capabilities to the thumbnail view, and possibly a COM interface
for programmers.

As to the auto-layout feature, a lot of RIP engines (raster image
processors) for large format printers allow multiple images to be
gang-printed on a single large sheet of paper for economy. Many
RIP's are smart enough to determine an optimal orientation, and the
individual prints are then cut from the page by hand with an Exacto
knife or whatever.

Thanks for the response,

Chris -- good feedback. Some comments below.

) The thumbnail view is about half way to being an album, which
is what most folks really needd. The difference is the inclusion
of a database like your Jet engine, allowing users to add a title,
description, date, etc.

You can actually get a poor man's implementation of this by doing
the following. Put your folder in "View by details". Then right
click on the heading bar, that will give you a list of all the
fields you can put into the view. In this list are comments,
title, author, date created, camera model, etc. Then turn on "show
in groups" in the "Arrange icons by" menu, and then select which
field you want to group by. The drawback here is that, of course,
thumbnail viewing is not supported in details view.

) An "auto layout" option would be nice when sending multiple
odd-sized prints to an attached printer. That way, a user could
just say "print this directory" or "print this album".

What would you expect the printout to be with these odd sizes?
Also, what is your definition of an odd-sized print?
