Quick B&W contrast tip

A quick one I often use for adding contrast to a flat looking B&W, is just to copy the background image to a new layer, and change layer blend mode to "soft light". Bring down opacity to taste. I'm often pleasantly surprised by results of this easy trick.

For special subjects, hard light can be used, but it gives a very, eh, hard effect... I used that on some shots I took in Auschwitz last year, it made them more raw looking, and suited the uneasy feel of the KZ camp.
