Hi there,

I returned last week from a 17 day trip through Cuba with my girlfriend. We drove right across the island about 2.800 km with a rented car, flew with a YAK-42 aeroplane from Cubana airlines and visited Havana, Santiago de Cuba, Camagüey, Trinidad, Santa Clara, Remedios and Varadero.

In short this is a marvellous place with lovely and very very friendly people. You can visit our entire gallery here: http://www.pbase.com/sharif/cuba&page=all (it's currently only about half of the photos I plan to upload. I will add to this gallery in the following days as I work through the about 3.500 images we took).

If you visit the gallery please don't hesitate to leave your thoughts in the forum. I love to receive some feedback!

Here are a few impressions:

For those interested: I took my photos with my 10D and the following lenses: 17-40 f/4 L, 28-123IS, 50 f/1.8, 85 f/1.8 and 200 f/2.8 L. Alex my grilfriend used her A80.

I hope you enjoy the pictures.
Regards,
Sharif

Very nice photos. It is amazing to me that a trip to Cuba is like stepping back in time. I would love to visit there someday and take photos.

many thanks for your encouraging comments! That was a wonderful trip and I enjoy it even more when you like my images.

I will upload more images the following days as I manage to work them through...

Great shots! Well done.

It is truly strange to see a country that seems to have stalled in time. If you compare these pictures to some prior to Castro, you will see the same cars and the buildings will look the same, just not in such a state of disrepair.

You pictures did a great job of showing the friendly side of the people. I very much enjoyed them.

Thanks for sharing them,
Jim

I left Cuba in 1965 at the age of 12. I haven't been able to go back for political reasons. Your pictures bring back some memories and makes me a little homesick. Thank you very much for sharing.
Best Regards,
Julio

Julio,

I hardly can express how happy your words make me. This is the biggest compliment I could think of. I am very glad that my pictures brought back some memories from your homecountry to you.

All the best,
Sharif

I really enjoyed your shots of Cuba. You let me take a trip without leaving my desk. The photo opportunities seem as if they are endless there. Can't wait to see more.

so nice to see real photography once in awhile. These are very good.

Although they are all very good. I like the poster that said they go to take a trip without leaving their desk - it's very high compliment, well deserved. This shot is National Geographic stuff, IMHO.

Thanks for sharing,

Thank you Michael for your compliment. Although I doubt National Geographic would find any interested in my collection it makes me very proud that you call one of my images in the same sentence with that fantastic publication!!

Many many thanks once again,
Sharif

Since it is doubtful that I will ever get to go there, I appreciate the opportunity to see it through your eyes. I think the combination of scenery and people pictures provides a sense of what it was like to be there. You have done a very nice job! Thank you for sharing.

But also "compatriotas."

I left Manzanillo in 1962 also at the age of 12 - most of my family left around that time, shortly after my cousin, Huber Matos, was sentenced to 20 years on trumped-up charges of being a "counter-revolutionary" (By the way, he wrote an award-winning book about the revolucion and his 20 years as a political prisoner titled "Como Llego la Noche" after his release - well worth a read!)

I also enjoy catching glimpses of Cuba and particularly enjoyed the one of the old street photographer with his box camera. It brings back memories of my childhood. These old guys were everywhere hawking their photos and I used to get quite a thrill when they allowed me to look at the upside-down image under the black cloth :)

Hi Julio,

this is really a crazy world. To hear your story and the story of your cousin makes me feel sad. Nevertheless I am glad you enjoy my pictures. It really means a lot to me that people who have grown up in that colorful country see some of their memories being brought back to life.

All the best to you and your family,
Sharif
