Re: Biggest news since 1994 from canon on sept 5.

My theory: The key to this mystery lies in Canon's history and its "DNA".

In the case of 3M, for example, nearly everything it makes is basically 2-dimensional or liquid. Tape. Post-It Notes. Scotch Brite cloths. Adhesives. Bandages. Ceramic tiles. You might think its stick-on hooks are an exception but they're not. It's merely application packaging for the tape that holds it to the wall.

Canon's "DNA" is lenses. It's their specialty. It's where they devote their imagination and energies. Lenses for nearly every application. If they have to wrap a copier around a lens, fine. If they have to wrap an x-ray machine around it, fine. If they have to wrap a consumer camera around it, fine. If they have to make lenses for broadcast and ENG television markets, fine.

So start from the lens and work backwards to predict the next big move that Canon will make. Also note that Canon rarely makes daring plunges and is nearly never the first into its markets. It prefers to follow the philosophy that the second mouse gets the cheese.
