I am trying to get in touch with Bill but no avail so I run his program myself

Peak Dynamic range is 11.08 Ev which is not particularly good

PDR at ISO 400 instead is high at 10.25 Ev

Camera seems to have noise reduction kicking in at 6400 until 25600 and then drop back to the linear trend before as there was no noise reduction from ISO 32000

Camera received on Loan from Lumix not firmware 1.0

I will send data to Bill tonight I think the images were taken correctly as I have done it multiple times and results did not change. I have provided already 5-8 camera tests to him so the procedure is well known to me

I was expecting better performance at base ISO while it seems the camera does better in high gain from ISO 400

Do you know why the S1RII looks softer compared to other cameras in the studio chart ?

Maybe it's like a G9II situation, where dynamic range boost needs to kick in. Or mechanical VS electronic shutter.

I had high hopes for this camera since it's not stacked and BSI

Let's see how it will turn out. Ideally I hope it's in the a7CII / a7RIII territory bare minimum

There is no dynamic range boost this is a traditional back illuminated sensor with dual gain circuit made by Sony

The S1RII has a "dynamic range expansion" option in the menu

Wasn’t soft at all in my testing at the weekend - check out the flash shots in the impressions post I started

From other videos, I know that there are some issues with the processing of the S1RII with Adobe. Do you use Adobe software for the testing?

No I use custom software and siril broadly working on DNG files or RW2 files

I think siril uses dcraw which is open source

Okay, thank you for sharing. Could it be a camera firmware issue?

If it holds true, it would be a bummer. I was expecting to get better DR and less nois because of the Sony BSI technology, compared to the stacked competitors. If it's vice versa, it would be very unfortunate.

The firmware is provisional

Bill got in touch he will look into it then if it looks weird I will contact Panasonic

Camera has firmware 0.57 so not a production version

Hopefully that's the issue.

Could you test DR of Hires mode also? I am curious to know whether hires and handheld Hires mode are 12bit ADC or 14bit.

I found handheld hires RAW in S5M2 was so noisy and tended to cause heavy banding in dark area which made me think it was 12 bits ADC and somewhat upscaled to 14bit stored. The histogram in rawdigger also looked wired. If S1RII behaves the same, then it is a real pity.

BTW, I have another question regarding AF setting , since in body custom focus limiter function with Canon EF lenses adapted to S5M2 was unavailable, Is this still the case with the S1RII and could you help sort this out for me? Thanx in advance.

The Dpreview S1RII has firmware 1.0 and the files look mushy when using Capture One, more than with ACR.

Thanks for taking the time to do the tests and post them here.

Kind of a disappointment for me.

Custom focus limiter only works with native lenses. I need to check but it may not even work with sigma Lmount

But I will check that for you no worries

I just looked at some charts at photonstophotos and have to say, your measurement doesn't look to bad for the S1RII at all. I always have do mark measurements in mind, if I think about DR tests. But if you have used the photonstophotos method, it's only compatible to those charts.

11.08EV on the lowest ISO is a little below competition. Z8/9 have about 11.3, the R5II has 11.46 with MS and 10.92 with ES. The Sony A7rV even has 11.7. But the S1RII seems to loose less DR with increasing ISO.

I agree that the S1RII images in the comparator look a little soft, however, when I load their base ISO raw file into Capture One I think the result looks good to me, even at 200%. So, again, this is early days.

Here is the full-size output JPEG from the latest version of C1, all settings at defaults:
