That's it.

I haven't bought the minimac yet but heard it would be good with a monitor.

the TV is under my couch - teehee - been there for years.

thank you so much!

clueless gamma,

lorraine

p.s. if this is the wrong site to ask this, please let me know where to ask.

The Sony Bravia 32n4000 is a 720p TV with a resolution of 1366x768 pixels, two HDMI inputs, and a "PC" input.

1366x768 is a rather low resolution for a monitor of that size, and text will be huge on that screen. Is the plan to use the TV as a main monitor, or just as a secondary screen for playing video?

Thank you, Tom!!
The operating instructions says, "component video YPBPR or HDMI connections are necessary to view ....1080i format. This TV displays all format types of picture in its native resolution of 1366 dots x 768 lines."
I have no clue what that means. Do you?

What do you mean, "text will be huge"?
On my computer screen i can size the windows so that i can work on 2 at a time or watch one and work the other.

How will the TV monitor be different?
How do i move between different windows?

I guess what i'm asking is will it act like a computer monitor? If not, how will it be different?

I was hoping to replace my dying macbook pro with a new Mac Mini and the bravia 32n4000 tv screen as the monitor.

The operating instructions says, "component video YPBPR
Component video is a type of video connection used with some DVD-Video players – especially earlier ones. It carries analog video signals on three cables. The YPbPr is a reference to the primary color signals (yellow, blue, red) carried on those cables.

You are not likely to be using component video cables with a connection to a PC.

There are a few main resolutions for HDTV:
  • 720p – 1280x720 pixels, progressive scan
  • 1080i – 1920x1080 pixels, interlaced
  • 1080p – 1920x1080 pixels, progressive scan
1080i is a very common format for HDTV broadcasting. Your HDTV can accept 1080i signal on its component video and HDMI inputs, but since its screen only has a lower resolution of 1366x768 pixels, it will downscale the 1920x1080 video to 1366x768 pixels. This lets you see the picture, in more detail than an old NTSC (analog) set, but with less resolution than a full HD set would deliver.

1366x768x32" works out to 48 PPI. 1920x1080x24" works out to 92 PPI. So you'll be looking at text and objects that have almost twice the linear size (or four times the area) as their counterparts on a 24" monitor.

You'll also be able to fit only about half as much stuff onto the 32" TV screen, as you could have fit onto a 24" monitor.
How will the TV monitor be different?
How do i move between different windows?
You'd move between windows in the same way as on any monitor.

Thank you all for your time and thoughts.

I think i need to think about an alternative to this. Would you please consider my computer needs and recommend one (or more) for me?

so, here's what i need in a computer:

> i often have 4 or 5 browser windows open at a time, with 10 to 15 tabs each.

> at times i have whatsapp, instagram, facebook, telegram and spotify or pandora for music.

> i use google stuff - gmail, sheets, drive, docs, etc.

> i watch amazon prime media or netflix in the evening.

> i need an affordable computer (i have a very limited income - minimum socsec.)

I think that describes my computer use.

and again, thank you so much!

What is your definition of affordable? I.e., approximate total budget for the computer, monitor, and software?

In terms of what you're doing, I think a lot of it would benefit more from a good, large screen; adequate RAM; and a fast Internet connection than a super-fast processor, or super-fast graphics card.

That's a very nice machine for an Intel-based Mac. You get a large, 27", 5K Retina screen. The 8 GB of RAM is user-expandable to 128 GB . Apple's now charging $1600 for a 27" 5K monitor that has no computer built-in. If you purchased that monitor to go with the least expensive custom-order 16 GB / 256 GB M1 Mac Mini, the damage would be $2500 before keyboard and mouse; maybe another $200+ to get the Apple ones. A Mac Studio / Studio Display setup would be $3600 before keyboard and mouse.

Factory RAM is configured as 2 x 4 GB so adding 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) of third-party RAM or 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) of third-party RAM would give you 24 GB or 40 GB of RAM (all you're likely to need). You would not need to do that right away. Plenty of options for adding external storage.

The main drawback is that with Macs moving to Apple Silicon, you may miss out on some features – and you may find that after a few years, third-party developers stop releasing new versions of their applications for Intel-based Macs.

Thank you, Tom. I really can't understand that techie talk (think li'l o' lady, intelligent but not techie savvy -- yet!:-) )

so far to help you help me...
i have several EHDs from 500G - 8T. my macbook pro is very old and i wouldn't consider it's capacity to a new one. the one i would have compared to ( my old iMac) is gone so i can't compare the tech stuff.

i just got this recommendation but i want to make sure the computer in this recommendation (below) has the same (or better) capacities as this one, that's waiting for my ok to order, has?:
tech specs, etc:
https://www.apple.com/shop/product/...z-6-core-Intel-Core-i5-with-retina-5k-display

my recommendation for you is get a refurbished M1 Mac-Mini from Apple for $589...and if you don't already have a monitor/display to go with it...spend about $250 or less on a 24"-27" display.

I'm assuming you already have a keyboard & mouse from your present/past Mac's.

This comes out to be about $839 + tax (or less)...for an M1 Mac Mini + display.

M1 Mac Mini has the new "Apple silicon" hardware (the wave of the future for Apple). The refurbished 27" iMac uses an Intel CPU...which Apple is definitely moving away from. Also...M1 Mac Mini probably has better performance across the board than the 27" 2020 iMac.

* Geekbench 5 CPU score for 27" 2020 iMac (6 core i5 3.1 GHz CPU) = 5654
* Geekbench 5 CPU score for base model 2020 M1 Mac Mini = 7401

$839 (M1 Mac Mini + display) is much less than $1437.15 (27" 2020 iMac)...for a computer which will probably give you more years of service...more current technology...better performance...and lower electric bill too!:)

Hi Tom. I think i replied to the general thread instead of you.

I know i'm asking a lot here... I need someone to compare the two options for me, to determine which one meets my needs. 🙏

{sigh...} I forgot to note that i am very sensitive to electromagnetic radiation - EMFs - so i use ethernet. Is that compatible w/ the mini? I also use a corded keyboard. Would/could i place the mini next to me and plug in the keyboard? How would this all work together?

The M1 Mac Mini sells for as little as $590 renewed, much less than the iMac 27 you mention. You'll also need a keyboard and mouse.

I believe the Bravia TV will hook up with HDMI to the Mac Mini and work somewhat acceptably as a monitor. I've tried this before with HDTV (1920x1080) which the Bravia is not quite. Sony might have a "text" setting in the TV. Monitors usually show a crisper image than TVs intended for viewing broadcast and cable.

If this doesn't work, can you find a monitor that someone is throwing away? In my neighborhood I see them on the street for trash day all the time. Alternatively, the Dell monitor I'm using on my employer's Macbook, which can't handle high res, costs $150 new:

https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-24-monitor-s2421hn/apd/210-axhj/monitors-monitor-accessories

MacOS treats a low-res monitor as non-Retina, no problem.

I don't believe the OP will be very happy with the result of using a 32" TV set that has a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels as a monitor.

The M1 Mac Mini comes with Gigabit Ethernet, standard, and you can custom-order one with 10 Gigabit Ethernet for $100 extra.

The Mac Mini has four USB ports on the back. Two of those ports are USB4 "Swiss Army Knife" ports that have USB-C connectors. They support USB4, USB 3.1 Gen 2, DisplayPort, and Thunderbolt. The other two USB ports have USB-A and support USB 3.0.

You can get inline plug adapters that let you plug USB-A peripherals like keyboards, mice, and printers into the USB4 ports. For instance, Amazon sells two-packs of Syntech USB-C plug adapters that operate at USB 3.0 speed and cost $10 – $13 per pack (depending on the color you choose).

There are USB-A hubs that plug into a USB-A port or a USB-C port and give you several – typically four - USB-A ports. This would be a simple way of adding more USB-A ports for the use of a keyboard, mouse, printer, memory card reader, or external SSD or HDD.

I'm going to look into the adapters you suggested.

What do you think?

You can get an LG 4K monitor for $350. I'm not sure what the $700 one has that this doesn't.

Thanks CAcreeks!

I have no idea how much time and energy you and Tom:-D @Tom_N all spend, even just for me, but i am so grateful!!

first, I'm clueless to compare...

the one you mention is amazon's "choice" and there are others for less.

If you don't mind, why did you choose that one over others? (again, i'm clueless)

Hi Tom!! i hope you read my thanks in my response to cacreeks. I @ed you.

By now you know my needs so do you think i would want a 10 gig ethernet?

oh and thanks for the other info you sent with this one. I'll have to chew on that for quite a while.

amazon's link for monitors others for less than the one apple recommended. What do you think?

True, Philips and AOC are only $269 for UHD (4K) 27", Samsung $289.

Brand loyalty? LG makes panels for many monitor manufacturers. Visiting Best Buy, I liked the colors better than Samsung. Haven't seen Philips or AOC in person.

Good luck shopping. I bought my LG27UK650 for $499 just before Covid quarantine. Don't know what I would buy if it failed.

10 gigabit Ethernet would be useful mainly if you had much faster Internet service than most people in the U.S., or if you had an elaborate home storage system with a 10-gigabit-capable NAS.

You probably don’t need it.

If you have the money for that combination (M1 Mini + 24” 4K LG UltraFine), another possibility might be a 24” M1 iMac.

Note that with the iMac, the display is forever tied to the built-in computer.

For either type of machine, 16 GB of RAM would be a good thing to get for future-proofing.
