when you have to leave your expensive digital [or pro film] equipment in your van, suv, wagon or truck?I have a mid size suv, lots of glass, and i was petrified if i even ran into 7/11 for a soda. Then i found this link somewhere [www.truckvault.com] and after ordering one of these babies i never feel that way anymore. They are not cheap but if you are a pro shooter,or just carry a 1DS for that matter, this may be something of interest to you.One point before you think the unit is expensive, wait till you see shipping charge. The full size units are 150lbs+.I live in s.Fla and they are in Wash.[state] and my ship was $250[you can save $50 if a comm. delivery].If you don't need the full size boxes [excursion, suburban]you should be able to talk him down on unit price because if i remember they were all the same price, but i argued that i mine was 1/2 the size of those units why should i pay same price. It worked for me!The secure feeling it gives me... priceless!!! By the way they do have a couple models for large cars.

this is a verry stupid subject man you are supposed to talk about photography not how sacre you are to leave your equipment in your car. If you have nothing digital related to talk just read about it ok

Sorry man!I thought this might be of interest to working pros or those with expensive digital equipment.Thought of putting it in open talk but didn't know if these people would see it there and it a bit expensive for hobbyists..

I make all my money with my cameras. I found the link very intresting. As a pro

who has ahuge investment in gear any thing to help keep it secure is not stupid. SO fo you Sir if the topic didnt intrest you move on who made you mayor? Also this was photo related and should be in this forum,

I think the forum is called "Pro digital talk", not Pro digital photographs only talk. This thread actually belongs in this forum more than I do. But what do I know, I am not a pro.

I don't see what's wrong with the original post - we carry expensive equipment with us every day, that is essential to doing our business and makes us a target to the unsavoury elements of society. Even if your insurance covers the equipment loss, it typically won't cover the work that you lost while trying to replace the gear - so naturally, the security of our equipment is just as important as shooting techniques or equipment selection. No matter how good you are, you can't take pictures without ANY equipment ;)

This post would be out of place in the Nikon SLR/Canon SLR/etc. fora, however in a professional photography forum like this, IMHO it is quite on-topic :) Security is part of the business, so this item makes sense to discuss...

PS Thanks for the link edward!

I'm always amazed at how quick some people are to judge others. I too, found it a topic of interest and would like to thank the original poster for his thoughtfulness. If you don't like the topic, just hit the damn back button on your browser. For crying out loud! It takes much more time and effort to respond and tell the poster how much you disapprove.

Edward, I (and I'm sure others) would be interested in some pics of the vault in your vehicle, if possible. Thanks again.

So far i had no problem because i NEVER leave my gear in the car except for long lenses and tripods in the trunk. But soon i will be changing one of our cars to an SUV and was actually looking for some solution. This is definately interesting.

As for the other gear that is in the bag i always take the bag with me. In Florida leaving your cellphone inside the car is enough to get broken into.

Thanks for posting this.

I was beginning to think my reasoning was wrong on posting it here.I glad to hear from some that they might have benifited from this info.I was taken aback by Carlos' response because everybody else has been so nice and helpful to me.I try to contribute any helpful info I can. Thanks again.

edward,

buy camera insurance. good coverage will cost the same as your box annually.

but you will be covered for loss ( you break it via drop etc.) and theft you bag or car is

stolen. My coverage includes international coverage. I don't worry now. I would be
mad about the images I lost if they were stolen.

So your investment is betting against the most likely ways you will lose the
use of your equipment.

go to http://www.nppa.org and look for insurance link.

It is around $30+ per $1,000 on your equipment list.

Costly but very effective should I ever need help fast and am cleaned out.

Thanks for the reply-and i agree with your thinking but i work out of my truck[on location]with the back open and a table set up for display.I feel a lot more comfortable with all my stuff in my box knowing if i'm busy with a customer nobody is checking out[with] my stuff.I saved your link because that is my next step,i am currently selling all my film bodies to go digtal,so i will look into it.Thanks again!

Very important and great info to know. In an earlier post I was surpised to find many pros were very passionate about their vehicle - I'm sure this is of interest to them too. Please show a few pics and let us know how it is working out.
ps Carlos sounds like a moron.

Snipped the advertisement
I think this was a poor attempt at free advertising or at worst a bad case of spam.

Personally I don't leave my D100 and related equipment in my car. Ever. Since it's with me I know where it is and don't worry about some punk stealing my camera and other possessions.

As for protection from thieves and the like I have firearms for that and hope I never have to use any of them.

Anyway I don't leave valuables in my car or anywhere that might compromise their remaining in my possession.

I have a heavy duty wheeled pelican case in the back of my Cherokee that's attached to the Jeep itself with a heavy duty Kryptonite cable.

I can drop the bag into the case, lock it, and feel reasonably sure that if I go into a restaurant or gas station that someone's simply not going to come along and break the windows and run off with the gear.

I went with the case instead of the truck-vault (seen it before) because I can also pull the case into a hotel room and lock it down there as well.

Finally, when traveling I put my clothes into the pelican and carry the camera on as a carry-on. When I'm at my hotel I can put the clothes in a drawer, the camera bag back into the case, and secure it as before.

Ed,

I think the best advice so far is (since you are talking about an $8000+ 1Ds) is to insure the equipment and then have a lockbox of somekind behind your seat (not visable) I personally just put my S2 in case behind my seat under a dirty burlap sack in my worktruck. I don't live in a highcrime area though.
