I would like to know if anyone here got D800 extreme left focus issue fixed by Nikon USA.

My D800 arrived from B&H last Sunday is having same focus issue. I took the camera to local Nikon service centre today. They also confirmed that it has serious left focus issue.

Since I'm in Qatar, my return shipment to US for repair and its paper work will cost good amount. So, before I decide to send it to Nikon USA, I want to ensure that they have figured out this issue and are able to fix it. Or I may get it back more or less in same condition (as per some early reports).

Option-2 will be returning it to B&H. I have already paid customs duty here for this camera and moreover, it will be a long wait for the next one if I return it.

Note: in case you got your focus issue fixed, I would like to know which US service centre it was sent to (if so, I also prefer to send mine there).

Kind regards,
Dileep

I am in the US and I contacted Nikon on 5/3/2012. I told them the problem I have (left AF point is soft compared to the center and/or Live View. I also sent them very good sample images. It took them 6 days to respond and the response was basically please call us because some issues can be resolved over the phone.

Nonsense. I called them on the 9th and even provided more samples to the person when we were on the phone. He agreed there was an issue and said he will need 24 hours to have an engineer review them. Later that night he sent me an email stating the images were not good because I didn't use Nikon software to export them. So, I installed the Nikon software and uploaded the images again. I didn't hear anything the next day. I contacted them again and they said someone will look at them in 3 hours. 5 hours went by and I didn't hear anything. I contacted them again and they still said an engineer will need to review them and it hanse been done. I went back and forth like this for a couple of days. I haven't heard anything the last couple days even though I keep asking for updates. At this point its been almost 2 weeks since my initial contact with no response. I think its time to contact a class action lawyer. I've already found one that looks like they could help, especially given the proof this is happening to multiple people with "brand new" cameras out of the box. In addition people have to spend more money out of pocket to correct something that should not have been an issue to begin with. I can understand a small amount with varying issues, but nearly the amount of cameras with the same issue. This is negligence on Nikons part to not thoroughly QC these and/or properly test the product. Typical of many manufacturers these days and quite frankly I'm tired of it from a consumer stand point.

+ 1 for the class action lawsuit.

It's been 3 weeks from the time I originally contacted them and submitted sample images. They basically denied the issue and claimed that all severe OOF images are perfectly in focus! 5 days ago, they emailed me back and said that they have escalated my case to the upper management for review and it will take 24-48hrs. Since then, I have not heard anything back from them.

Thanks for sharing your experience and sorry to hear all this. This is why I now return it directly to the dealer when there is an issue instead of sending it to Nikon service (which I tried with one D800 without success). I just don't have the nerve to deal with them.

Yea Nikon USA sucks. People in Europe and Asia are able to send theirs in and get them back calibrated. Nikon USA has their head up their

Agreed. This is precisely why I haven't sent my malfunctioning D4 in yet.

Until Nikon publicly acknowledges and takes responsibility for this problem and describes a universal solution to properly and successfully fix these widespread issues, then I refuse to be a guinea pig twice for Nikon.

At this point, I'm starting to agree that the only way to get Nikon to publicly admit to this problem is class action lawsuit.

They're really beating around the bush on this issue, and hopefully they do something official by the end of the month.

I contacted Nikon with a description of the left-focus issue, received a response within a day.

Nikon asked for samples images, and responded again, within a day to the images I sent, saying there was an issue that certainly warranted evaluation by techs, and supplying instructions for shipping to Melville.

Camera arrived there yesterday afternoon, Im told I should have a response within 3 days...

I sent mine to Melville, it was shipped on Wednesday May 2 and got it back on following Friday the 11th. Finally found some time today to thoroughly test it on my affected lenses: 24, 35, 85 1.4G's and my 14-24 & 24-70 2.8G's. Out this lot none showed the crazy left focus sensor inaccuracy as before. All but the 14-24 need some fine tuning +3 to +4 for best results. 14-24 is spot on without needing any tuning (this was the most troubled lens before the calibration). I am trying to work on fine tuning my 70-200VR2, but ran out of time, and this lens is by far been the most difficult to find the best setting for fine tuning; 70 & 200 is best at +4, but the middle range needs something different. I'll be at it again when I find some more uninterrupted free time this week, but I am very happy that Nikon came through with a fix.

Thanks for eveyone's inputs to those of us waiting patiently for the bugs to get fixed.

Seems like the Melville repair center knows how to deal with the issues.

Has anyone that sent theirs to El Segundo had any success with a repair?

My D4 which has lockup and AF-S/AF-C focus priority issues was sent to El Segundo and was returned back to me after 10 days or so. The issues remained and of course, they want me to send it back to them.

So, by my count, that's:

Nikon, Melville (New York) = 1
Nikon, El Segundo (Los Angeles) = 0

Anyone heard anything else from El Segundo yet? Also, I appreciate everyone's reports, but please try to also include the location of the service center you dealt with, and the affected body's serial number series. Thanks!

Received my D800 (3001xxx) back from Melville on 5/8 with no improvement to the outer focus points. I will be waiting for a public response from Nikon before sending back in.

Regards,
Dustin

Well by my count it's Nikon, El Segundo (Los Angeles) = -1, as they had mine but it came back with the same issue.
