1Ds is a noisy machine

Remember all those pixels though, you can downsample it a long way before D60 resolution to lose noise, also noise that fine will not be visible in normal sized prints.

Just want to let you know, that Fred Miranda has cheated with 100%
crop of the ISO 200 image. It was photoshoped to hide noise, and
the levels was set incorrectly to make it alldarker.
http://www.fredmiranda.com/1Ds_review/index_noise2.html
And look at the parts, that was not bloured, they are so nosiy! And
this is just a ISO 200!

Yah, I saw Fred Miranda editing those images on a laptop on the grassy knoll!

p.s. What I hate about the 1Ds is that whenever I try to shoot verticals
the camera always bumps into the metal colander I wear on my head to
deflect the Martian mind-control rays.

Why would Fred Miranda cheat us?? Isn't he trying to give us the best possible information? I liked his review. I expect that if the 1Ds were a noisy beast, he'd tell us and Canon right away!

Who needs 11 megapixel camera, to downsample the pictures? If you print, you're usuallu blowing 'em up, not downsampling.

Why would Fred Miranda cheat us??
Cuz he was payed by Canon, to advertise it.

He is trying to give the best possable advertisement to the 1Ds.
I liked his review.
Not bad but.... unfaithful.

Dont you see it yourself?
BTW, did you look at the 100% crop of the ISO 100 image at all?

I read the following:

"Fortunately, chroma noise is the easiest one to reduce in software.
Below is an image shot at ISO 400 for you to inspect. "

as... here's what software reduced chroma noise looks like, and below is what you get right out of the camera.

No big cover up is it?

= People would find out quickly enough if this cheat meant like this. Then it would be byebye Fred, wouldn't it?

"The above image is virtually noiseless and has incredible detail at ISO 200."

I applied ridiculously high USM 500/2/0 to emphasize noise. Traces of brush are clearly visible.

Sloppy PS work, by the way.

Igor, how did you manage to see this? You have eyes of the eagle?

It looks more like an isolated glitch to me. That tiny blotch was the spot containing really bad noise that Fred had to hide??

You know that really doesn't make sense.

I posted the wrong "Unsharpened 100% crop" version. That crop was an edited version I was playing with. It was not supposed to be there. I'm glad you catch the mistake. (which has been corrected now)

The default crop straight from the camera without any sharpening/editing applied that should be there instead, was posted below:

Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Best,
Fred

Igor--

The word "cheat" has a very strong meaning and in no way should be used to describe Fred's review which was extremely well written and even-handed.

From your recent posts, I think the "truth" is you're over in the Foveon Sigma camp and are trying to find any fault you can with Canon's cmos design.
Maybe you can get Al Gore or Jesse Jackson to support you?
The 200 ISO 100% crop does not look noisey at all to me.
Yes, but it was bloured.

and it had enought noise by itself....much more than my D-60 at 400 shot with a 400 2.8 and 2x tele in poor light.

Come on Igor. I understand your frustration, but let's be fair here. You know this is non-sense. I was working with more than 40 images for this review. I'm glad you spotted the mistake for this 100% crop which was not the original from the camera. This was an isolate issue and a mistake when choosing the correct file to crop.

The corrected crop straight from the camera was just replaced now.
Fred

That crop you just posted still has that wierd glitch on the head over the eye, is this some smoothing in the 1ds gone awry or did you have an accident when making the crop.
