How is the picture quality in UHS mode on the 7I? At 7 FPS, if the quality is good, this would be perfect for action.

I've printed 4x6's that were quite nice. Others have reported good results at 5x7.

I agree. The quality is great, and the printed picture size is only reduced because UHS reduces the resolution. I use continuous drive a lot for action, too. That takes about 3 pictures in the first second, and then slows down to maybe 1 a second or something like that. (I forget what the exact spec on that is - partially depends on the compression you have set.) But you can take full resolution 2560X1920 JPEGs in this mode. As a matter of fact, my camera is typically set to continuous drive. That way, I can take more than one shot just by holding down the shutter, and take only one by just releasing the shutter. If I'm taking a group portrait, for instance, I always squeeze off 3 or more shots. That way, I can usually get a picture with no one blinking.

Jeff,

Excuse my ignorance, but I am a newbie photographer, and I just bought my Dimage 7i about 6 weeks ago. I haven't even figured out how to get the camera to do bursts of shots like those pics of your dog. Can you tell me where to find those instructions (or how to do UHS). BTW, nice photos.

Out of curiousity what is your Compact Flash card? I have San Disk and it seems slower than hell, which is not surprising after reading the "Digital Film" review on dpreview.com.

some pics i took with UHS mode - not too long after buying the 7i.
the resolution is smaller but still good for capturing motion IMHO.

Have a look at pages 54-56 in the manual - It explains the drive modes and how to choose them. I found the best way to learn the how's and what's of the 7i is to sit down with the manual and the camera and actually try a couple of shots with each thing the manual explains. Then life gets a lot easier - I think the 7i has a very well thought out user interface. I only wish the EDF indicated the position of the effects dial so I wouldn't bracket on contrast so often because I forgot to move it back to exposure position :-)

My compact cards are Lexars.

Happy shooting!

Hey Jeff,

I´ve found that pic already by sneaking about your gallery. I beg your pardon ;-) The picture is really wonderful and I love the idea of the composition. There are a lot of possibilities in this technique. I have to do some by myself. Thanks for the inspiration!

Jeff,

I love what you did with the photo of the kid jumping out of the tree. I am new to the D7i, but I love it tons. I have taken some neat shots with the UHS mode. Some with a golf swing sequence. I was wondering if you could show me how you put all the photos together into one shot. Thanks in advance for the advice.

it was pretty easy

1-open all the photos in photoshop or paintshop pro (both work in similar ways for this composite)

2-copy each image to it's own layer - i did this using the first image in the series as the base file - make sure to SAVE AS so you don't overwrite the original

3-when putting a copied image onto a layer, i set the layer transparency to 50-70% so i could see through it and line it up with the underlying image

4-in each layer erase everything except the kid, making sure to get the overlaps right.

5-bada bing bada boom - image done

Jeff,

Thanks for the advice, somehow I skipped over those pages. I'll try it out.

So the Lexars work well, I see. I wonder if getting the 24x speed is overkill. I definitely want to get at least a 16x or higher. Do you think it will improve the Dimage 7i's performance?

I might just get one anyway. Thanks for your help.
