OK...

-So I am one of a handful of people who have had the opportunity to shoot it against most of the other cameras in the industry..

OK...
-So I also hang out with the guys who make the camera...

It rocks!
(I have to say it again..)

We just finished up a shoot with our photographer ("Ralf") at the booth at Photokina...
The detail is amazing!!!!

We just sent the files out (again) to be printed as mural prints for the show tomorrow...

I just talked with a professoinal photographer called Leon Obers who visited your stand recently , he rated the image quality of 14n very highly.
http://www.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1021&message=3466480

Now here is a question:

Where do you put the IR-cut filter this time? Will it still be over the mirror box or will it be placed over the imager like those of Nikon and Canon?

From what I've learned , one of advantages that CMOS sensors have over CCD is that you can read data selectively. I think it is entirely possible that Kodak provide a cropped 6MP mode.
This way we can have :
1. faster FPS , since less data is read , processed and stored.
2. faster flash sync, probably up to 180 when using pc sync

And since the N80 has gridline on demand viewfinder , we can do framing efficiently enough using those gridlines when the camera is in cropped 6MP mode.

Finally , thank you for being here , it does make a difference.

That is too bad...
Perhaps he should go look at something better...

(The ONLY camera with better image quality on the market sports one of the Kodak sensors used in a medium format camera back!)

The IR0-cut off filter is on the sensor......

This needs more than a quick answer...
I REALLLY need to go to sleep.. (now 4:37AM)...

Thank you..
That is why I am here (contributions are accepted!)...

Jay Kelbley,

I left an email for Kodak about this, but, what the heck, maybe you can find out.

The DCS Pro 14n has an in camera DSP. My little bit of knowledge about this is that these are fully programmable.

My question is whether Kodak will make a Software Development Kit (SDK) available for individuals and companies to create new filters and features (plugins) that could be downloaded to firmware.

As an example, I would like a feature to increase dynamic range and reduce noise by sampling bracketed images. There is software to do this on the market, but having this in camera would be really awesome. You get the picture.

Anyway, thanks,

tom

-So I also hang out with the guys who make the camera...
Um, yeah, that would make you like totally objective right?

Check out the Sigma SD-9 if you want to see detail.
Too bad they didn't put that chip in a good body with
a Nikon mount.

Where is the camera assembled and what, generally, percentage of the camera is an American product?

I'm very interested in the camera and would love to have Eastman Kodack emblazoned across my new camera as opposed to some foreign brand.

Our country is economically challenged and if I can help keep some jobs from going away HERE in the USA it would mean a lot to me.

I guess this is an old fashioned or unpopular opinion these days but I'm an OLD poop and sending money overseas has never been a joy to me.

Maybe if you guys make enough money you could open up a lens factory.

Regards,

Scott Fleming

Jay,

Since you work with the Kodak Professional Digital people, please pass on my comments.

Over the past 15 months, I've put 65,000 exposures on my 760. Look me up, serial number K760C-0730.

I was SO excited when an associate mentioned the 14N to me, with it's full image area, CMOS capture and the last great news.... 2 lbs.? Awesome!!

After reading the specs on Kodak's site, I was ready to put down my credit card... then I came here and read that the 14N is based on a N80. Isn't the S2 as well??

1/125th synch? Please... besides studio shooters, photographers need a 1/500 synch, or at least as I and other 760 users are dealing with, 1/250th synch. It's a serious step back in time to a slooooow synch of 1/125.

It's unrealistic to publish this camera as a 'pro' body since it is based on something which is not.

Your software/interface (PhotoDesk) is excellent, but the serious/professional photographer is being left out in the cold with slower synch speeds, than your competition, and a 'pro-sumer' body with it's other drawbacks.

Thanks for reading about my disappointment, I hope we are heard by someone at Kodak. Perhaps there's something in the pipeline?

Scott

In your sleep deprived state I think you might have misconstrued that Jay, The person Nikonism was referring to (Leon Obers) has written nothing but praise regarding the quality of the 14n images .

I saw this remark too and said -- "Oo OH!!

But I think it was miss-interpreted as you say. Leon has been very enthusiastic and informative about the 14n.

If I had not been sold already, Leon has sold be totally.

This camera isn’t a pro model if it only has a 1/125 sync speed?

Let’s see. The following must not be pro cameras because of their slow sync speed.

Mamiya 645AFD
Contax 645
Pentax 645 (1/60 sec.)

Please let all these portrait and wedding photographers know that they are not using professional models.

To me the issue of the 1/125 sync speed is a "what item". I want a 1/250 or 1/500 but I can live without it.

The slower sync speed is only an issue outdoors and not in the studio. The slow sync speed does have a work around due to the 80 ISO and fast Nikkor primes. (You can use a 85mm f/1.4 lens with a 0.6 ND filter. The lens will then act like an f/4 with the viewfinder and AF sensors.

Other than this "minor" issue, the camera sounds perfect to me.

Yesterday, I told my photo dealer that I want one.

Mr. Kelbley:

I lust after a particular brand of big, white lenses. Is there any chance in the forseeable future there MIGHT be a 14C?

Question 2: Is there (I know you have been asked this a hundred times) any chance that you could provide a link to one of Ralf's 14n pics. I wouldn't mind even if it was mildly tweaked. Sorry about this question, but you are teasing us with your statements about the fantastic pictures you are seeing from the 14n. "It rocks!"

and yes, I spelt your name correctly, so I guess you gotta answer this, or not.

There are many of us that would gladly give our money to Kodak for a 14C and just as gladly let Canon make a good profit on the sale of their lenses. Everyone wins, except our wallets, or purses ;)

Canon, are you listening!

The specs shown on this site don't list Windows 98SE as an OS compatible with Photo Desk and other software pertinent to this camera. The PD for the 760 does list 98SE, so what's the story? Some of us will not want to alter our existing computer environment for one camera. I still use Win98SE for reasons I won't get into here.

How about some 14mp samples?
OK...

Aaron Thomson,

I must have been asleep for the last few days! I would have never figured out that the "n" designator was for "Nikon".

Now you have me wondering how this would effect the 1Ds.

I now have an N80 with only one lens, a 28-200, so a "c" variant would not effect me any, but it would still impact overall support from Kodak if they were to increase their overall user base.

Next thing you know, "o", "m" and "p" variants. Not a bad plan.

tom

Win98SE is still my favorite OS. I have 3 desktops. Two are WinXP Pro and the other is Win98SE. XP crashes once in a while, my 98SE doesn't. I do find XP easier to network.

Looks like the new Kodak software will not run on Win98xx. I use Win98SE when doing on-site pics. When and if I go to Kodak it looks like I will have to upgrade. Will still keep 98SE on one of the other desktops though.

There are so many features that pros typically look for, I don't see the reason
to discredit the camera for this "limitation". As you say, studio photography
will not suffer. I think we're starting to get spoiled by the introduction of
high synch speeds and high ISO's. If that's terribly important, then there are
other choices.

Just another opinion.

It took me a day or two to notice it also.
Now you have me wondering how this would effect the 1Ds.
It would cut down on the body sales. It would increase Canons sales of lenses. They would probably make more money on the lenses than lose on the bodies. But they have their pride, would rather see their glass on a Canon body.

No way, they are too small players in the market at this level.
