Hi Daniella.
Have you considered a monopod for those shots at low shutterspeeds? It won't do on a 3 sec exposure but it can make a lot of difference if properly used. If I'm shooting in very low light or with teleconverters I find it of great help. I have a C-210 and B-300 stacked which gives 32x optical zoom. I can't handhold this without some support but with a monopod I get much better results. Adorama.com has made their own monopod called Podmatic (an improved version of the discontinued Linhof monopod). It's gotten great reviews and is very compact. It came out after I got my own Bogen but it would be my choice if I had to get another. I think it's around $60-70 and you'd want a good compact ballhead to go with it ($40-50).

I have no problem taking handheld shot at full zoom for the type of
photo i take..mostly above 1/60 and most speed i use is between
1/200 and 1/1000. At 1/200 its quite easy to handheld the camera
and for me its still that easy at up to 1/60, then i need to
concentrate more and i need to wait for the right moment when i see
i have less motion.
I don't use much speed below 1/30 though, its not some thing i need
to use often. surely between 1/30 and 1/2 IS is very usefull and
you probably never get a blured shot at that speed with IS on while
i would probably get many blurred shots. When i do need speed that
slow i bring a tripod, like for my waterfall photo i used 3 seconds
exposure i think.
I guess it is just a range of speed that i don,t use enough to
compensate for the big size of the c2100.
but i agree though...for Alaska with the shivering etc..i would
probably better off with a c2100 ! LOL
I hate cold and i shiver very easily when its cold
--I'm not taking sides here but I have to agree with Terry that
taking sharp handheld shots at 10x full zoom is quite a task. I've
seen you're pictures and they're great. I don't know how much
shooting you've done previously with film but you really have a
natural eye for composition. I have fairly steady hands myself if I
don't drink too much coffee but at full zoom I don't think I can go
below 1/30-1/40 and get sharp pictures without IS. With IS I can
get decent shots as low as 1/4-1/2 sec if I really concentrate.

but i was starting to wonder about the same thing... LOL
--hmm why do i have a feeling of déjà vue???
hehe..
--Hello everyone, I am trying to decide what camera to buy, and I
need some advice. I am going on a trip to Alaska, and I want to
get a good digital camera with a nice zoom so that I can take some
good pictures of the wildlife. The 10x zoom on the c700 caught my
attention, but the 2.1 megapixels scared me because I'm not sure if
that is good quality.
While inquiring about the c700, others suggested that I take a look
at the c2100. It has been discontinued, but I found it for
$500...which is cheaper than the c700. Both have the same zoom and
same amout of megapixels.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.
Richard
