c2100 vs. c700

Hi Daniella.

Have you considered a monopod for those shots at low shutterspeeds? It won't do on a 3 sec exposure but it can make a lot of difference if properly used. If I'm shooting in very low light or with teleconverters I find it of great help. I have a C-210 and B-300 stacked which gives 32x optical zoom. I can't handhold this without some support but with a monopod I get much better results. Adorama.com has made their own monopod called Podmatic (an improved version of the discontinued Linhof monopod). It's gotten great reviews and is very compact. It came out after I got my own Bogen but it would be my choice if I had to get another. I think it's around $60-70 and you'd want a good compact ballhead to go with it ($40-50).

I have no problem taking handheld shot at full zoom for the type of
photo i take..mostly above 1/60 and most speed i use is between
1/200 and 1/1000. At 1/200 its quite easy to handheld the camera
and for me its still that easy at up to 1/60, then i need to
concentrate more and i need to wait for the right moment when i see
i have less motion.

I don't use much speed below 1/30 though, its not some thing i need
to use often. surely between 1/30 and 1/2 IS is very usefull and
you probably never get a blured shot at that speed with IS on while
i would probably get many blurred shots. When i do need speed that
slow i bring a tripod, like for my waterfall photo i used 3 seconds
exposure i think.

I guess it is just a range of speed that i don,t use enough to
compensate for the big size of the c2100.

but i agree though...for Alaska with the shivering etc..i would
probably better off with a c2100 ! LOL

I hate cold and i shiver very easily when its cold :)
I'm not taking sides here but I have to agree with Terry that
taking sharp handheld shots at 10x full zoom is quite a task. I've
seen you're pictures and they're great. I don't know how much
shooting you've done previously with film but you really have a
natural eye for composition. I have fairly steady hands myself if I
don't drink too much coffee but at full zoom I don't think I can go
below 1/30-1/40 and get sharp pictures without IS. With IS I can
get decent shots as low as 1/4-1/2 sec if I really concentrate.

Maxven
but i was starting to wonder about the same thing... LOL
hmm why do i have a feeling of déjà vue??? :)

hehe..
Hello everyone, I am trying to decide what camera to buy, and I
need some advice. I am going on a trip to Alaska, and I want to
get a good digital camera with a nice zoom so that I can take some
good pictures of the wildlife. The 10x zoom on the c700 caught my
attention, but the 2.1 megapixels scared me because I'm not sure if
that is good quality.

While inquiring about the c700, others suggested that I take a look
at the c2100. It has been discontinued, but I found it for
$500...which is cheaper than the c700. Both have the same zoom and
same amout of megapixels.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

is the diff between the 2
Yeah opinions.everybodys got those
C700
small and light
For girlymen & petite dainty women with weak wrists
1/1000 shutter speed user selectable
10x zoom
Barely usable handheld by mere mortals over 5x
Full manual w/b
I just ordered an e100rs today for this
no vigneting in wide angle with PL and UV filters
Is this a common practice? why?
USB autoconnect, quick downloads, just like
If it were up to me I wouldn't even give cameras the feature to download pics.I'd supply a reader in place of the useless 8mb SM card.LOL
record movie at 15fps and up to ISO 800
Lota good that does with no"IS"jitter much??
I'm happy with 400 but might consider 50 more of a boon
great battery life, can go all day LCD ON with 2 sets of Nihm 1600
Not when you take as many pics as me
Takes some getting used to but worth it(Also comes on the Uzi)
ISO 800 (more noisy than 100 but still usable if not underexposed)
plastic in back pannel only, other parts and front is alloy
Wow think how much lighter it might be if it were plastic
thread on outer tube need adapter available (5$ to 19$) 3 filters can be stacked
Together without vigneting
Big deal
LCD 1.5" 114,000 pixels brightness can be adjusted dark layer for
clear viewing under bright sunlight
now there's a big battery saver.don't even bother using the damn thing like I do
although even out of focus shots tend to look good in the cheesy little thing
c700 disadvantages
WHAT!? You mean it has disadvantages.whoever said that should be shot
no lamp assisted focus
That's as big as manual WB
some chromatic aberation
But not for you
some noise in underexposed photos
As with most digicams in general
no remote control, only timer
Take it or leave it although it probably would be more beneficial with a non "IS" beast
does not come with batteries and charger(18$-25$)
That sucks
EVF is hard to see in very low light
where's that focus assist beem
no "IS" hard to handheld full zoom for shutter speed slower than 1/30
Gee with a few repeat trys I've hand held 1/2 sec nightshots although I don't attempt it often if there's somthing to lean on

Rested my hands on my car for this

but still had to frame & press the shutter three times with my hands.good thing I had the Camedia pano autostitch my hands would've been too tired to stitch due to the unmanageable weight of my Uzi.Bet yall are gettin sick of this by now
Most people can handhold up to 1/60 without problem at full zoom
1/60th.I can do that all day
but will need a tripod for slower shutter speed.
yeah half second or slower with an uzi
c2100 specs:
10x zoom with image stabilization
& it actually works too
1/800 max user selectable (1150 can be acheive if pointing at a
bright object and if light is strong but is not user selectable
and only possible in very specific situations)
very specific.I could only dig up 3 in my galleries
like you really need more?
lamp assisted focus for low light (range around 10 feet)
Well that's what's listed but your mileage may vary.I've gotten farther with mine. Must be an anomaly like the intermitten vignetting
See above
record movie at 12.5fps
My manual says 15fps (pg105)
I guess I better call Oly for the Real info & have the manual writer hung
remote control (3sec delay)
I think 2 would've been enough
come with one set of battery and charger
More than you get with most & they're actually pretty good
49mm thread.stepup ring is recommanded to avoid more vigneting (5$)
You forgot to mention especially when you stack filters...Which must be a pro technique since I don't do it anyway
LCD 1.8" 114000 pixels no coating or dark layer brightness can
be adjusted
Big deal or it would be if there were no VF like my last camera

Gee.ya forgot to mention FLASH INTENSITY adjustable + - 2 EV in 1/3 step increments.or maybe it's 1/2 stepMight be handy with that home made defuser contraption disscuss here a few weeks ago
c2100 disadvantages
If you're a girlyman or a petite little dainty woman with weak wrists
bigger and heavier (632g) than the c700 (310g)
Yeah but still much lighter than your average 35 mm with image stabilized Zoom
1/800 user selectable
(1/1000 user selectable on the c700) {This is in the wrong section
Nothing like repeating oneself at every turn
But on bright days with ND or CP filter not all that big a deal
No manual white balance
Yep forced me to order the e00rs to get that baby
NO USBautoconnect, need the Camedia software or a USB

some camera will have vigneting in wide angle, although not all
seam to have this problem
Yeah I guess but it's not consistant & who uses a 10x at wide alot anyway
Will have more risk to get vigneting if using UV and PL together
Yeah nothing like puttin as many layers of glass in front of the CCD to get all the the sun flares you can muster
all plastic body
Yeah no worries about DENTs
Limited to ISO 400
Don't think I've come out of 100 since I figured out you can lock it at 100
Battery life is not as good as with the c700, especially while
using the IS system

Jeez Louse UziP... They start giving out an award for longest post or something??? grin

I've got both, if I had to keep only one of them it would probably be the 2100. I find myself using it more than the 700, but in a month from now... who knows, I could be on the other side of the fence. I love the IS, the autofocus assist lamp, and I get less chromatic abberation (only had traces of it with the 2100 so far) than with the 700. Not to say that I don't think the 700 is a great camera though, but the 2100 seems to be a better all-around camera for what I've used it for.

Also, if I were to keep only the 700.. I would worried sick that people like UziP would consider me a "dainty girlyman"... grin

Cutman,

My wife and I are also going to Alaska for 18 days in June. I did not have a digital and started doing some research for a UZ. I read the comments on the c700 and c2100 for weeks. The IS on the c2100 is nice. After much research I finally gave up and went with price. I found a c700 at Sears for $377. Also got coupon for free 64meg card. The camera was a return but I can not find anything wrong with it except a small scratch.

Also, you will need some NIMH batteries and a fast charger. I bought at Rayovac 1 hour charger at Walmart and 8 Rayovac 1600 NIMH and they work great.

That's about the same results I get. Getting sharp, handheld shots at full 10x zoom with a 1/10 second without image stabilization is impossible for me. I even tried it with my 3040 which doesn't have near the zoom either the 700 or 2100 has and I can't do it so size and weight aren't a factor. I figure that I could do it if I died momentarily but I fear that I may not be able to get the ol' ticker goin' again. ;-)

Hello,

they are both great cameras. The c700 is now 499$ in many local
stores but i paid 435$ online shipping included at buydig.com.
The 2100 is also $499.
here are some specs for both cameras and some of my opinion on what
is the difference between the 2 cameras:
Oh, what a surprise! There's those "specs" and "comparisons" again. At least you've declared these are your opinions this time.
C700 specs:

small and light
1/1000 shutter speed user selectable.
10x optical zoom
Full manual white balance control
no vigneting in wide angle (even with PL and UV filters on)
USB autoconnect, quick and easy to download photos, just like
another hard disk.
record movie at 15fps and up to ISO 800
great battery life, can go all day LCD ON with 2 sets of Nihm 1600
EVF
ISO 800 (more noisy than 100, but still usable if not underexposed)

plastic in back pannel only, other parts and front is magnesium alloy.

lens thread on outer tube (need adapter), adapter available in
49mm, 52mm and 55mm (5$ to 19$) but 3 filters can be stacked
together without vigneting at 52mm

LCD 1.5" 114,000 pixels, brightness can be adjusted, dark layer for
clear viewing under bright sunlight.
How do you know this? There's nothing about this on the Olympus website which list the specs.
c700 disadvantages:
You forgot to mention that, in order to use any filters on the 700, you'll have to buy an extension tube which costs about $20-$25. If you're going to leave a filter on the lens for protection, you'll have to leave this tube on all the time which increases it's size and the possibility that it can be snapped off.
no lamp assisted focus for low light
some chromatic aberation in backlited subjects
some noise in underexposed photos.
And some 700s exhibit these problems more than others.
no remote control, only timer
does not come with batteries and charger (18$-25$ investment)
More like $30-$40 for good ones like the Rayovacs.
EVF is hard to see in very low light
no image stabilizer, hard to handheld full zoom for shutter speed
slower than 1/30
Most people can handheld up to 1/60 without problem at full zoom,
but will need a tripod for slower shutter speed.
Did you take a survey?

1/800 maximum user selectable (1150 can be acheive if pointing at a
bright object and if light is strong, but is not user selectable
and only possible in very specific situations.)
Hmmm... if you know this then I'm curious as to why you asked if the 2100 could be set to 1/1150 second in another thread? I believe it was the one where DomDP got a new 285HV flash.
ISO 400
lamp assisted focus for low light (range around 10 feet)

c2100 disadvantages:

bigger and heavier (632 grams) than the c700 (310.5 grams)
1/800 user selectable, (1/1000 user selectable on the c700)
Didn't you already make that statement?
No manual white balance.
NO USBautoconnect, need the Camedia software (free) or a USB
reader/writer (app. 25$).
They can also be had for FREE if you watch the sale ads.
connectivity problem with Windows XP
some chromatic aberation in strong contrast areas.
some camera will have vigneting in wide angle, although not all
seam to have this problem.
Doesn't seem to be a high percentage.
Will have more risk to get vigneting if using UV and PL together.
all plastic body
Won't dent, won't ding, and won't conduct temperature well.
Limited to ISO 400
Battery life is not as good as with the c700, especially while
using the IS system.
What do you mean? Without the IS, both cameras would be on a par as far as battery life is concerned. I'd rather have the security of the IS and pack an extra set of batteries. Usually, I get by on two sets though.

I see you're still dead set on posting your slanted comparisons. Why don't you do as I suggested and just post the specs on the camera you know the most about? YOURS. All you know about the 2100 is conjecture, opinion, and hearsay.

Don't be scared about only having 2.1 megapixels, certainly not if your camera has a 10X zoom, because:

1) If you need more than 5X, your picture will turn out to have more pixels in the final picture than any normal 3X optical zoom camera with 3 or 4 megapixel CCD's. Why? Because those cameras need to zoom digitally to get beyond 3X, and digitally zooming = huge pixel losses.

2) If you need no optical zoom (like a landscape taken at full wide), just use the pano function and stitch some pics together. Easy as 1 2 3! By doing so, your image can have as much or more pixels than a 3 or 4 megapixel camera. See this example of 4 pictures stitched together (image size: 4972x968=4812896 pixels):

Yes, I do: go for the UZi. That IS works: in low light situations and/or at full tele, you'll need it. And even if you are one of those 'lucky few' that can take a sharp 10X shot handheld: your PERCENTAGE of succeeded pics will certainly be much higher with IS. And don't forget: when photographing wildlife, even at full tele you may not get a 2nd chance to get a sharp picture.
You're welcome. 8-)

I have a C700 as a backup camera to a Sony CD1000 and pocket camera. Size was of paramount importance, and I was overjoyed to find the C700 with 10x zoom (same as the Sony).

However, if this is your only camera and you don't care if the camera is pocket size, then I would get a camera with image stabilization.

Both the 2100 and the CD1000 are discontinued. If you have time, you might wait to see what new cameras are announced this spring. Others here may know what Olympus is expected to offer.

Image stabilization is marvelous. No tripod or monopod required, even at full zoom with the CD1000. We are having a lot of trouble holding the C700 steady, made more difficult by its very small size and low mass.

I find I take FAR more low light pictures with digital than I did with film because I can instantly SEE what I'm getting.

If this is your first digital camera, you will have to figure out what you are going to do about media. Either buy lots of expensive media, get an offline disk store, or take a notebook computer. It would be a shame not to be able to take all of the pictures you want to take in a location like Alaska!

Thanks for all the great responses. I'm sorry about bringing up this topic again...I should have searched before asking the question!

Great choice, the 2100 is a great camera. PMA is at the end of this month, they may announce more new cameras then. That doesn't mean that they will be available then though. If I were in your shoes, I would just go ahead and get the 2100 now. The camera is rumored to be discontinued and they are getting a little harder to find now. You can get the camera now and enjoy shooting with it and if something comes along in the future you can EBay it and get most, if not all of your money back.

CompUSA sells them for $499 and I have read that some Walmarts have them for that price also.

need some advice.

Thanks.

Richard

Rumor has it that the technology isn't available yet to match the current 10x "IS" lenses to larger ccd's for technical reasons I have no clue about but the Canon Pro90IS is currently the largest match to a 3mp ccd that yields a 2.5 mp file...& it has a few more features niether of the olympus's have but From what I've read it's not as easy to handle and the focus isn't quite as fast or accurate as the UZI.

It comes at a slightly higher price and requires proprietary batteries and CF & or Microdrive media...."AA" batteries & price was enough for me to go without a hotshoe & tilt swivel screen...Or I might've went with it....But the Uzi hasn't dissapointed & I'd buy another tomorrow if this one was lost or stolen even though I have an e100rs on the way...But there's been no mention or even hints from any companies of Uzi-like cameras with higher rez on the horizon anytime soon & the suggestion to get an UZI now with ebay as a solution to upgrading later is a good one..You'll miss alot of fun as well as be able to get comfortable with the UZI prior to your trip. But the learning curve aint steep either. Cause if something does come around it's probably going to be 3 times the price as the current uzi price...both the Uzi & e100rs were over $1000 at thier introduction & with the weight given to higher MP's in the current market chances are the price will be exorbitant with a "NEW" high rez 10x IS beast....Go for ir Dude & have some FUN..

If you're like most of us you'll have a hard time putting it down...& if you can get a hold of a B-300 or similar converter for Alaska you will get unbeleivable results....It's a seemless match to the UZI...I'm dyin to get mine..
Thanks for all the great responses. I'm sorry about bringing up
this topic again...I should have searched before asking the
question!

It sounds like the c2100 will be my best bet, but I have one more
question: Are there any cameras on the horizon that would be worth
considering? I have a few months before I must get a camera, so
atleast a little bit of time is on my side. Any idea if a camera
with atleast a 10x zoom and maybe 3 megapixels might come out
before now and summer?

Thanks again.

Richard

For girlymen & petite dainty women with weak wrists
Well, i don't have weak wrists, i do lots of mountain bike and dunno if you knwo..that you can't do that with weak wrist not weak anything...I just don,t like to carry around big camera when i hike all day.

and i don't think any c700 owner do...but i am not fat, so i care about the weight i carry when hiking. some people i know spent $$$ just to remove 1/2 pound out of their mountain bike...and they are VERY athletic people.

I did not liked the c2100 not because i was getting tired with holding it..but because i was getting tired of carrying it around.
1/1000 shutter speed user selectable
10x zoom
Barely usable handheld by mere mortals over 5x
no its not barely usable by mere mortal over 5x..even for older people, my mother can do it.
no vigneting in wide angle with PL and UV filters
Is this a common practice? why?
Its common for me, i use the PL often and i don't want to take the risk of scratching the lens or damaging the filter threads and since i cannot see any difference by using the UV and PL togher or using the PL alone...i never remove the UV.
USB autoconnect, quick downloads, just like
If it were up to me I wouldn't even give cameras the feature to
download pics.I'd supply a reader in place of the useless 8mb SM
card.LOL
Well sorry but i would not trade that feature for anything...i just love that USB autoconnect and even if i have a USB reader..i don't use it for that.
record movie at 15fps and up to ISO 800
Lota good that does with no"IS"jitter much??
nope...not much even in a crowd pusing you around:

great battery life, can go all day LCD ON with 2 sets of Nihm 1600
Not when you take as many pics as me
I usually fill up 2 128 cards...and my 8 meg useless card in one day but maybe you do more, dunno.
plastic in back pannel only, other parts and front is alloy
Wow think how much lighter it might be if it were plastic
If you like plastic...jsut wondering..is the e-100 plastic too?
LCD 1.5" 114,000 pixels brightness can be adjusted dark layer for
clear viewing under bright sunlight
now there's a big battery saver.don't even bother using the damn
thing like I do
I like to use if to frame the shot for composition..i use it all the time..without it i could probably only use on set of battery for all day.
no lamp assisted focus
That's as big as manual WB
Yes that is a big deal if you take lots of low light photos, i need to use the manual focus when i shoot in pitch black.
some chromatic aberation
But not for you
Well, not so much, not something out of normal.

As example, look at Phill test image of the marina with white boat, then take a look at Steve review, he has about the same iimage but not much CA..? that's what i get when i do the same type of image, not what Phill show.
no "IS" hard to handheld full zoom for shutter speed slower than 1/30
Gee with a few repeat trys I've hand held 1/2 sec nightshots
although I don't attempt it often if there's somthing to lean on
Rested my hands on my car for this
resting your hands on car is not exaclty handholding. :-/

like i already said, for me the IS would be usefull at those slow shutter speed, and i cannot handheld the c700 at 1/2 second full zoom for sure..but i can at wide angle though.

can you handheld the c2100 at 1/2 full zoom with IS, what is your limit with full zoom and IS? i mean handheld..not resting on car or anything?
but will need a tripod for slower shutter speed.
yeah half second or slower with an uzi
Yes that's where the IS make a big difference.
and only possible in very specific situations)
very specific.I could only dig up 3 in my gallerie
if the object is black or dark, will you be able to get that speed? will you be able to get it when you really need it?
like you really need more?
its rare but i used this for shooting the monster trucks event..it was dark, even for ISO 800 i could not use fast enough shutter speed to freeze any motion.

http://www.pbase.com/zylen/monster_trucks

Those were taken at ISO 800, along with the video clip. but its something i need very rarely.
lamp assisted focus for low light (range around 10 feet)
Well that's what's listed but your mileage may vary.I've gotten
farther with mine. Must be an anomaly like the intermitten
vignetting
how far can you go with yours? did you mesure it?
Gee.ya forgot to mention FLASH INTENSITY adjustable + - 2 EV in 1/3
step increments.or maybe it's 1/2 stepMight be handy with that home
made defuser contraption disscuss here a few weeks ago
yes that is available on both c2100 and c700, i guess i will add this to my list.
c2100 disadvantages
If you're a girlyman or a petite little dainty woman with weak wrists
I don't have weak wrist..i am very sportive in fact...just get tired of carrying weight i don,t need to. ..also if you want a camera you will take everywhere, the c2100 is not so convenient. I even take my c700 to school with me strapped around my belt, feel just like a big cellular phone.
some camera will have vigneting in wide angle, although not all
seam to have this problem
Yeah I guess but it's not consistant & who uses a 10x at wide alot
anyway
I do :) i do lots of landcapes when i go hiking.
Will have more risk to get vigneting if using UV and PL together
Yeah nothing like puttin as many layers of glass in front of the
CCD to get all the the sun flares you can muster
flares? hmm i never got them so far.
