Kinko’s Sucks

So after reading this thread from Bob http://www.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1008&message=2070697

I went to my local Kinko’s to try out the Tektroniks laser printing. I carefully picked some images to print, sized them to 8 x 10, burned them to a CD and drove to my local Kinko’s store. Thinking that they were open all night like they advertise I arrived there about 4:30 pm and read the sign on the door that says hours are between 8 am and 5 pm on Sundays. The advertised costs to print out an 8 ½ x 11 are $1.99 each, Bob must have found a deal at .99 cents each.

The guy behind the counter must have worked at CompUSA because he didn’t know much about how a printer on a network works. I asked him to sort the directory by date so I could pick the 2 files that I wanted to try first and he just looked at me with this blank look on his face! I showed him how to sort by date and he loaded my images on to his computer. Next he loaded up Photoshop version 5.5 and it took 5 minutes to fully load up, next he selected the 2 tiff files to print out that I wanted to test first. After a 5 minute warm-up by the printer the first one printed out ok. The paper that they use is regular laser paper nothing special but kind of thin, I asked him if he could use something else and he said “this is the only paper we are allowed to use on this printer” I have to admit the colors did come out real good. But the printer locked up on my second image and refused to print so the guy turned off the printer and we had to wait another 3 minutes for it to warm up after which it said no paper in tray 1, next he tried to print out some more images and the printer just said ready and nothing happened. So back to his computer we went to look for any error messages.

I asked him to call up the info on the printer and he said what? So I said just select Start then Settings then Printers then select the correct printer. After it came up we could see the files there but it said printing 0 of 4 meg and just sat there. By this time it was 5pm and he said that the night guy quit so they have to close at 5pm. I told him to forget it and I would try the other store in town (10 miles away) at least I got to keep the first print for free.

On to the other store. Yep they were open all right. I asked the guy behind the counter that I wanted to try printing some photos out on the Tektroniks laser printer and he asked “what format they were in” and I said with a smile “TIFF format.” Next he said “that would be a $9.95 charge to open up a tiff file and print it out.” “WHAT” I said “did I hear you correctly $9.95 to print a tiff file?” “yep” he said. “What format do you not charge $9.95 to print” I asked and he said “any image in KDF there is no opening charge.” Apparently there is this special Kinko’s software (free) that you install on your computer that acts like a printer driver to save any document that you want to print out at Kinko’s in a special KDF format. Then you have the option of emailing or hand delivering them the files and they will print them out for you. I mentioned the other store not charging any extra to print out tiff’s and he said that wasn’t right.

He handed me a copy of the software to load on my computer that will install yet another printer driver. I will have to think about that one. So all I got out of that trip was 1 free printout of one of my photos but it’s on regular paper so I have to be real careful with it. The colors are nice and it would look good mounted under glass but is real thin and is subject to creases and marks.

Anybody else have any problems with Kinko’s?

Craig,

Take a look again at Bob S thead and look at last ones. You'll see my experience at Kinko's and see that I think it not as good as it seems. Didn't have all the problems you did, but there were other charges I had to pay and the print while it is good, was not as good as my inkjet printer.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience. I guess each store is different. I just dropped off the zip disc and came back the next day and had gorgeous prints. No extra charges (they were Tiffs). No computer time cause they printed them. 8x10 was $1.29 and 11x14 was $2.58.

Should I had put a disclaimer in my post?

Sorry for trying to help...

I'm happy with my prints!

Craig, I noticed when I got my zip disc back that there were some extra files on there. Theres a Appleshare PDS, Desktop DB, Desktop DF, a couple .dat files and one called Virex speedscan. There is also a folder on there called The Volume Settings folder. Not a clue what these are but I'll probably leave them on the disc for when I use them again.

Again, sorry you and Doug didn't have the same good experience that I had...

Yea, the colors are great and like I said, these are thinner than regular photopaper but look great matted and framed under glass. My wife was very impressed also. For 4x6's though, I'll continue to use Walmart.com.

Yes, I think for 4x6 and 5x7 walmart.com is hard too beat.

I might go back to the first store and try them again. The guy said that on Monday another person will be there who knows more about the digital printing than he did, except he might also know about some hidden charges. If I were to handle the prints real careful and immediately mount them to a frame they would look pretty good.

Bob, thanks for the info on this and hey if it works out for me then it will be good, and if not o well no biggie.

No disclaimer, but I called the KInko's in Providence and they want $2.59 for an 8x10 and $5 for 11x14.

I guess each unit is independent, or they don't have a set policy.

I agree with Craig.

After reading both threads about Kinko's, I downloaded their software, prepared KDF files from my photos, burned them to a CD-R, and brought them to a Kinko's store.

The conversation in the first store went like this:

Clerk: What is the name of the file you want printed?
Me: There are five files, in a directory called "600dpi"
Clerk: What's that?
Me: That's the name of the directory the files are in?
Clerk: What's that?
Me: The name of the directory. Do you know what a directory is?
Clerk: No

That's when I left that Kinko's and went to another one. With the second, I didn't even get that far. I told the clerk I had KDF files on my CD-R and wanted them printed on the Tektronik 780. He told me that printer is only available for use from the self-service computers. I told him what I had read in this forum and that it was my understanding that if I brought them KDF files, I would not have to use the self-service computers and wouldn't have to pay for the use of the self-service computer. He called over a supervisor who said that KDF files are only for documents with fonts, and that Kinko's has to convert KDF files to PDF files before printing.

He said to use TIFF files.

I give up. It's not worth the trouble and the time.

Goes to show you how diffferent one store can be from the next in ther policys and employee training. I guess I'm fortunate that the employees at my local Kinkos are more on the ball and also that there policy regarding use of there printers is much more liberal.

All I did was bring in a zip disc with the images and they printed them no questions asked and no extra charges. Beautiful colors.

I certainly hope more people have a positive experience like I have. They can't be all schmucks...

I guess the moral here is try at your own risk. Mileage may vary from store to store...Bob

Craig,

Last weekend I took up a calander that I had made using MS Publisher, it was a 17 month calander. I spent 3 weeks of and on putting text on the photo's and resizing them and getting all the dates on the calander part. I spent a couple of days printing them out on my 1270 and then called Kinko's to see about binding the calander...they said it would be $4.00. Well I took the calander up there and showed the gal at the counter what I had and how to bind it. I said, now listen....it has to be bound on this side....she said...ok. She took the calendar back to a guy in the back and they talked for about 5 seconds and then she came up. I kept looking at him and thinking to myself "I hope she told him what side to bind it on. After about 10 minutes this guy came up and ploped my 2 week project on the counter and I opened up my calendar only to find that the mother $ ( $ had bound it on the wrong side. My girfriend and I just looked at each other, needless to say we were pissed. It took me about 5 minutes to get through to this guy that he had messed it up royaly. The only thing he could say was that he was sorry! I said sorry doesn't get it....he took the calendar and cut off the ends he bound and re-did it on the other side but it looked terrible...the bind was now in the picture and it was shorter. He told me to bring up the file and he would print out another one, which I did and he did print it out but it just wasn't the same. The colors were not as vivid as my 1270 prints. In 17 months when I bring my next calendar up to them I'm gonna follow it back to whom ever does it and watch them like a hawk.

Stephen,

Sorry about your calendar, like I said KINKO’S SUCKS. I think Office Max can do binding also. At least you can watch them do it right in front of you.

Do you think that the guys that work at Kinko’s used to work at CompUSA? It just amazes me how incompetent some people can be or maybe for minimum wage they just don’t care. I am not saying that all of the people who work at the above companies are incompetent but it seems like the people who we deal with are.

I am still going to try out the first place that I visited as soon as I get the time, maybe later this week. I will burn a CD with both kinds of files to try out. At least he didn’t charge me any computer time. Sure I could send them online someplace (how is Wallmart for 8 x 10’s?) but it’s the instant gratification of getting them done right away and at a lower cost. Himmmm…there is a Wallmart not to far away… maybe I will see if I can have the online ones sent there to pick up.

Craig,

Last weekend I took up a calander that I had made using MS
Publisher, it was a 17 month calander. I spent 3 weeks of and on
putting text on the photo's and resizing them and getting all the
dates on the calander part. I spent a couple of days printing them
out on my 1270 and then called Kinko's to see about binding the
calander...they said it would be $4.00. Well I took the calander
up there and showed the gal at the counter what I had and how to
bind it. I said, now listen....it has to be bound on this
side....she said...ok. She took the calendar back to a guy in the
back and they talked for about 5 seconds and then she came up. I
kept looking at him and thinking to myself "I hope she told him
what side to bind it on. After about 10 minutes this guy came up
and ploped my 2 week project on the counter and I opened up my
calendar only to find that the mother $ ( $ had bound it on the
wrong side. My girfriend and I just looked at each other, needless
to say we were pissed. It took me about 5 minutes to get through
to this guy that he had messed it up royaly. The only thing he
could say was that he was sorry! I said sorry doesn't get
it....he took the calendar and cut off the ends he bound and re-did
it on the other side but it looked terrible...the bind was now in
the picture and it was shorter. He told me to bring up the file
and he would print out another one, which I did and he did print it
out but it just wasn't the same. The colors were not as vivid as
my 1270 prints. In 17 months when I bring my next calendar up to
them I'm gonna follow it back to whom ever does it and watch them
like a hawk.

Thanks,

Stephen

Walmart is great for 8x10's. I've never heard anyone complain about them. Yes, they will deliver them to your local store with no shipping charges...They use Fujicolor Crystal Archive paper. Real good stuff....

I feel bad so many people are having trouble with Kinkos after my positive experience. Sometimes ya get lucky I guess...Bob-- http://www.pbase.com/mofongo Whales are mammals. Mammals have hair. SHAVE THE WHALES!

If I couldn't go back and watch the guy or gal bind it I wouldn't let them touch it. I didn't know Office Depot or Office Max did binding! I may check with them also. I'm going to have to start calling the people that work at Kinko"s the "THE KINKO'S KLUTZ'S". By the way I asked the guy just out of curiosity how much they would have charged me to print the calendar they re-printed for me and for 34 pages it would have been $68.00.....one freaken expensive calendar....huh!

Man, I'm really sorry they botched your work. After that horror
story, I can't believe that you would even consider using them
again.

Success finally,

I went back to the first Kinko’s today and tried to get the pictures printed out again. This time there was another guy working there. He seemed to know what he was doing. He used the computer on the counter and loaded up Photoshop 5.5 and loaded my Tiff files right in and printed them out on the Tektroniks laser printer. The files could have been in jpg or psd as long as Photoshop 5.5 could read it he could have printed it. The colors are truly very vivid and bright just like Bob said they would be, they even look glossy. The only thing I have to be careful of is the thin paper that they have to use on this printer. If I don’t handle them much and put them behind glass right away they will look great. I wonder if there are any problems with fading? The pictures only cost $1.95 each and it only takes 5 or 10 minutes. I asked him to delete the files from the computer and he moved them to the recycle bin then emptied the recycle bin.

I think it pays to shop around and keep trying different places; next time if that certain guy isn’t there then I will wait. No way am I going to that second store (he wanted $9.95 set up charge)

Next I am going to sent them to Wall mart and compare the results.

I called my local Kinko's (100 miles away), and they said that they can print any file format I bring in, including PSD. 8x10 are 99 cents. I just have to get over there to try it out. (MT) Bob is right, as far as that goes. Until I get there I don't really know if the person I talked to knows what is what.

Email is an option, but untested. I should get my new S-800 tomorrow. Hope it is as good as the reviews.

All I did was bring in a zip disc with the images and they printed
them no questions asked and no extra charges. Beautiful colors.

I certainly hope more people have a positive experience like I
have. They can't be all schmucks...

I guess the moral here is try at your own risk. Mileage may vary
from store to store...Bob

I agree with Craig.

After reading both threads about Kinko's, I downloaded their
software, prepared KDF files from my photos, burned them to a CD-R,
and brought them to a Kinko's store.

Clerk: No
