Further News from SIGMA - another cam in the Pipe - the DP1

Any number of great little 35mm film cameras were primes. I still have and use the Olympus Stylus Epic with a very nice f2.8 35mm lens. I say still use, but I do think it is about to be retired!

There have been hundreds of them, just not many in the digital age. The Ricoh GR-D is an example. Some of the best cameras are fixed lens designs. A zoom lens is typically a slower lens. If this had a zoom lens it may have started at f5,6 instead of f4 or it would have needed a much larger lens which would change it from a pocketable point and shoot to a large bridge camera. You really can't have a tiny zoom lens with an APS sized sensor. This is a camera designed for photographers not for someone looking for the latest "me too" gadget.

Never heard about P&S cameras without zoom ;( It's so stupid

Wow, is this the true digital Ricoh GR, that Ricoh did not build!?
Nearly. No fast lens, no optical VF. Shame.

But I still want one :-)
Well, a fast lens on a GR-sized sensor isn't very meaningful.
No, but it would be great on the (nearly) APS-C Foveon sensor on this camera :-))

But it would be bigger, heavier, more expensive... F/4 is ok, all things being equal.
But like you, I want one too :-)
Who could resist? It looks lvery like a camera I've been waiting a long time for but nobody got around to making.

And, of course, I'd rather they just did away with the lens and had
a Sigma DSLR lens mount on the danged thing. That'd pretty much do
it for me - especially if they also included a high magnification
focus check mode.
and thereby make it the size of a brick
Well if you make some special pancake lenses for the thing ...

But yes, making it accept DSLR lenses does change the whole camera quite a bit.

before they drop off!!

Seriously - most people just stand and zoom, 'cos they won't walk up to a subject.

This should be a great camera, with a much better lens than the usual slow 4x zooms. Well done Sigma!!

A fixed FOV camera is the perfect opportunity to put in a decent
OVF. You only have to design for a single FOV. Center it over the
lens and you only have vertical parallax to worry about and you
could have VERY accurate horizontal framing.
I agree. With a single focal length lens, putting in a simple optical viewfinder should be no problem and certainly would be useful - for instance when sitting in darkened audiences as well. But frankly, the camera looks a lot like a mockup. So maybe that will get added.

On the other hand with the same SD-14 sensor, it makes some digital
zoomign (cropping) more practical.

Where on earth are you guys getting the idea this is the same sensor used on the SD14... to me it's a very small sensor with the same about of photosites, probably same technology as the Polaroidx..

Yes I have used a Leica. But I still see no point in looking
through a small tiny bit of optic that has no relation to what the
camera itself is seeing, whcih is what you would get if Sigma
attached a viewfinder to this camera. For small digital P&S
cameras I greatly prefer the LCD preivew.
It is a matter of style I assume. There are some benefits to the "tiny bit of optics" though. It is faster to follow something that moves. It helps you to hold the camera steady. It is visible even in the brightest sunshine. It helps me to concentrate on the task.

The last one is personal. The milage may vary.

But - if the best camera around does not have a finder - then - Ok - then it has no finder :) And if I really want one I will glue a hot shoe somewhere :) Looks to be room at the top.

It says so here.

Yeah, this camers is not for you. Use some style-mega-zoom-camera...

But please, don´t call yourself photographer, eh?

I believe they have their information mixed up. That lens cannot have an image circle that would work on APS sized sensor that close up and that small... no way.

Looks like a zoom to me. The diameter is to large for just a normal
lens, as you can see it looks the the center section moves in and
out.
It also clearly says "Sigma Lens 16.8 1:4"
