No hand luggage on any UK flight

What about checked luggage, if nasty things can get across through
hand luggage, what prevent them to pass in checked luggage. If the
scanning machine is not that reliable for hand luggage will it be
efficient for checked luggage?
Apparently those scanners for hand luggage are providing no security at all. They are pretty much useless. And photography is the usual victim.

Travelling by air is and has always been a calculated risk, as much things in life.

Wonder what all the traveling photogs will do without their laptops
  • forget the camera. With no key fobs allowed, I'd assume CF or
SD cards in pockets would be a no-no too... so better FEDEX those
storage devices to yourself before you leave or enter the UK...
Airlines should have already taken special care for all those sensitive electronic devices that are forced to travel as normal luggage. I'm not sure is a laptop or a camera is designed to be transpored (or better thrown) along with our checked luggages as cargo.

Thanks for the info. I travel once every year, I guess, I will have to avoid visiting countries where there is more risk.

I think one of the points about checked luggage is that this plot allegedly involved smuggling different components on board and then assembling them in the plane to make the explosive device. Presumably each part taken in isolation could be made to look harmless in a hand luggage scan. If the different parts got through but have to sit in the hold there is not much the potential bombers can do with them.

Making an explosive device that can work at a particular moment without a person being there to set it off is a lot harder to do, especially if you don't want it to be spotted.

Surely they can't be serious about starving babies too young to eat
regular food.
Let's see...baby goes hungry for a few hours, or dies in plane explosion thanks to terrorists smugling liquid explosives that X-rays can't detect onto plane?

Decisions, decisions...but I'm thinking the first choice might be better.

Yet another reason why 'breast is best'.

Not that simple. Terrorists blow ten planes, kill ten babies?

But your restriction on feeding will affects hundreds of thousandths of flights during the time the restriction stays, placing hundred of thousandths of babies under stressful conditions.

A fraction of the babies are bound to develop a condition, even if these are just 0.01% of the babies, you could quickly end up killing more babies with the restrictions...

Similarly many people already died, and will die because instead of taking a plane (with its relatively high safety) they took a car, or some other less secure means of transportation. Given the scale of the event, and the death rates on UK roads, odds are terrorist will have already indirectly caused the death or injury of dozens of people... even if none of their bombs explodes.

Things are never simple.

i am quite unhappy that i am unable to take my electronics onboard but understand that due to this threat they have released a strict set of rules and hopefully tone it down very soon.

do the airlines cover electronics that are under there holds?
I think i will just have to get a pelican case.

Turn large parts of the world into glowing sand? Good idea Jared.
Ended WWII and transformed one of the most fanatical regimes in history into one of the most peaceful, respectful, and productive nations on Earth.

Why argue with history? I say we should try it again.

No, that approach is ass-backwards and is exactly why those two
countries are being targetted in the first place. Instead, they
ought to reflect on why they are so hated and read up a little on
history and culture and learn from it.
Right...the hatred is all because of Bush and Blair. Has nothing to do with radical Islamic bigotry and clerics promising virgins in heaven for muslim men who blow themselves up hoping to turn the infidels around them into little bits of charred flesh.

No...NOTHING to do with that...it's all Bush and Blair's fault.

but there was a typo in the koran that went unnoticed all these years. instead of it saying "72 virgins", it really meant that you'd be getting "one 72year old virgin".

yikes!!

That is still considered a only symptom of the problem. Events do not just happen for no reason at all. Treat the cause, not the symptoms or you'll never bid rid of the sickness.

You are assuming that common sense is common.

ROTFLMAO!

Funniest thing I've read today :-)

Common sense informs us that you can't reason with people who fly
planes into skyscrapers or blow themselves up in planes.
That is still considered a only symptom of the problem. Events do
not just happen for no reason at all. Treat the cause, not the
symptoms or you'll never bid rid of the sickness.
I suppose we should have "treated the cause" when the Nazis were butchering Jews and the Japanese were blowing up Hawaii. Let's see...why do they hate us? Why??? Were we not nice enough to them? Do they not like our hair styles? So what if they're promising our death and destruction...let's sit down, have a chat, try to understand them.

God I'm glad the WWII generation wasn't full of self loathing wimps. Nobody sat around asking "why don't they like us" after Pearl Harbor. No, they spent their time working to do so much damage to Japan and Germany that those two countries would never, EVER even DREAM of starting something again.

security measures for flights to the UK and the USA have been
insane before, but this is completly wacky. Terrorist will find
ways to get things in the plane, no matter how much they
criminalize and pester every passenger.
Maybe in the near future we will be forced to travel totally naked :)

Now .. not sure about it, we could swallow something ... Maybe they should x-ray us also ???
