At present, virtually nobody sells them, so its kind of academic. Indeed, if you happen to be in Canada, you're luckier than I am in England, since you can get one from:Is it necessary to buy a Canon one, or are there 3rd parties that

I'd predict a wait until the Canon part is available and an even
longer wait (maybe for ever!) until there's a third party clone of
it.

Hi Sophie, I'm in the UK, and have just found one at UKDigital for £30 (canon brand, not OEM). I think I'll just order one without looking around any more, I dont feel comfortable just having one. ( I also found one at £40 but didnt bother to note where.)At present, virtually nobody sells them, so its kind of academic. Is it necessary to buy a Canon one, or are there 3rd parties that

I've found the best price for the S30/40 battery at
NormanCamera.com ($45)

..in which case £30 isnt a bad price at all, thats about $42!! We dont usually get good deals in the UK!The BP-511 is for the G2, Optura Pi MiniDV, and likely other Canon
cameras. It will not work on the S30/40.

Go here:

There are 4-5 places that have the battery for as low as $45.

Coo! That's new, since it wasn't on their system at all on Saturday when I trolled round the shops. And the Cambridge shop had the S40 for £649 which is a bit absurd.Jessops also sell that battery - for £24.90, though you have to
order it, (which I have done along with an advance order for the
S30 & the Canon case for it).
Actually - its seems to be the NB-1L they sell for 24.90 (according to http://www.jessops.com ). This wouldn't fit the S40 or the S30! Jessops' web price for the S30 is a ludicrous £549 - try http://www.tradecameras.co.ukCoo!
