Have discovered, as others have already mentioned, that the Canon software for converting RAW files is painfully slow on a Mac. I gather many people use BreezeBrowser, but as far as I can tell, this is a Windows only program. Any advice for a suitable alternative for the Macintosh?

If you find one, let me know. You can bet that Canon will not likely ever update their own software.

I recently upgraded Canon's software to vers. 3.7 which allows you to turn off a color filter in PS- this reduced the conversion time from RAW to TIFF from 47 secs to just over 20-which is comparable to Breezebrowser on a Petium III. Bets regards. DWF

I use a shareware program called GraphicConverter on my Mac to manipulate my graphic files. Since I don't have any RAW files, I can't test if it works from RAW to JPEG or TIFF. But it converts files from other formats (JPEG, TIFF, etc.) into RAW, so I assume it can open RAW files. It's a great little program. I've used it for years.

Thanks for the suggestion - however I tried GraphicConverter, and although it works with RAW files, it doesn't recognize the Canon version of RAW

Thanks Dennis. I have version 3.8 of the plug-in, which works fine. But ImageBrowser takes a dreadfully long time to update the screen if I just try scrolling through the list of thumbnails, for example.

Where would you have gotten a 3.8 version of Canon's plugin when I
can only find version 3.7 on Canon's website?
There were two files on Canons site- one was Vers 3.7 and the other was a file explaining how to turn off the color filter in PS-unfortunately the file was formatted for a PC-but I was able to decipher it and make it work-there was a big improvement-but you have to open the files in PS using the new Canon digital plug-n(make sure you trash the old one) Hope this helps. BTW i"m using a D-30-my Mac is a DP 450 G4 with 1.5G memory.

I'm curious as to how to make the PC file work for my Mac. Also, if there's a newer plugin off the G2 CD, why wouldn't it be available on Canon's website- maybe it won't work with the G1? I shoot quite a few Raw images- it takes about 20 or more seconds to convert through my plugin in Photoshop. I have a Sawtooth G4/350.

It does now!! The latest beta version of GraphicConverter adds Canon RAW format support. To get the latest beta, send an email to Thorsten Lempke at .

Converting to TIFF is a horrible process.

First, I copy the RAW folder from the CF card, copying the ENTIRE DCIM folder to my iBook's hard drive. Next, I use the TWAIN plug-in, selecting IMPORT from the FILE menu, then selecting CANAN DIGITAL CAMERA from the menu. Coosing the "My Computer" button, I can browse thumbnails rather efficiently. You can adjust your RAW white balance, then import the RAW files directly into Photoshop.

The speed of the Plug-In is directly related to how much RAM you've assigned Photoshop. I have 200 megs of memory assigned, and importing one RAW image takes about 14 seconds. This turns out to be a bit faster than our Pentium III desktop, so I've switched to the Mac (which also has slightly better Photoshop performance and colorspace control).

Hope that helps.

This is from the http://www.versiontracker.com description of the iview media pro release posted today.

"Added support for Canon CRW files. Media view displays 1440 by 960 preview version only until Canon releases conversion libraries."
