Backup or lose!...

Hi Manfred,
Excuse my ignorance, but what is Hi-MD? Not Minidisk is it?
Yes, HiMD is minidisc but allows you to store about 300mb on a regular 80min disc. Or 1GB on the new disc.

Writing speed is slow and the recorder are USB mass devices, no drivers needed.
As for CD's, yes they can fade and become unreadable, but from what
I have read, the better known brands are OK. And apparently DVD is
supposed to be more stable than CD.

Yes, after the cd rot thing happened to me, every disc (DVD & CD) which I now buy I get the most expensive & reliable type. & I have been slowly transferring my CDs to DVD. All recent photos are stored on MD first, then later archived to DVD every few months.

Anyway I am just so pleased with how long those MD lasted.
When I first brought them, they were for music only.
Now 10 years later, I reformat them for storing my photos.

I almost chuck them all out when the MP3 wave came.

Funny thing, several weeks ago
There was this bank in Hong Kong.

During renovation, the workmen & the bank made a mistake and remove all the deposit boxes from the basement.
These were filled with valuables and were not suppose to be removed at all.
These safe deposit box were dumped to the landfill by next morning!

The mistake was discovered when guys at the landfill with those compactors (or crusher thing) crushed the safe deposit boxes and out flew all the Rolexes, gold coins whatever. More than of the people lost all their belongings.

It made headline news for several days. See sometimes even the Bank is not safe. :-)
I have mulitple backups of my files on CDR, DVDR, External
Harddrive and my laptop. But I really need to have a copy of my
data outside of my home just incase of theft, fire or flood

I had to laugh at that one Darryl. Yes, there are Cox's everywhere, lots here in Australia. I come from the line that originated in Leitrim, Ireland.

Since my Cox line is a long time USA family the only connection may
be from the European Celt genitic line. When visiting England I saw
the Cox name everywhere.

My God! I'm speechless! Didn't hear about that, I bet some heads rolled!

Thanks for that information Manfred, I never thought of using minidisc for photo backups. The Theatre Company of which I am the tech director are thinking of buying a minidisc recorder/player for our sound files (music-sound effects etc) instead of using computers. I could keep it here at my house... :)

I believe that DVD's are better, in the sense that they are made to tighter tolerances. As mentioned in another post, we backup all of the school photo files at the lab where I work, onto DVD and there have been no problems yet after two years. Only time will tell but I believe DVD to be the best option.

We've had comuters siince the DOS days and had a crash many years
ago. Since then I've always backed up everything. I try to tell my
friends how important this is but, they don't listen.

We've got an external hard drive and too many backup CDs. Last week
we took the plunge and got a DVD burner and I'm in the process of
backing up to these and they will be stored off site.

I've heard that CD's are only good for abour 5 years. Do DVDs last
longer?

Yes, very good point.

This is one of the things I like about smugmug. If for some god
forsaken reason my house burnt down, my computer died, we were
robbed etc...
I'd have what I consider to be "My favorites" on smugmug.

You can also order a back up CD from smugmug too. They really offer
a great service.

How much discount will I get if I use them both? (said also in a joking childish manner but what if? hmmmm.)
