Colours & Shades: The World I Know
Challenge series hosted by Stormcastle. Challenges start on Saturdays.
As all of you prepare to duke it out in this arena, be sure to shake out your working photo folders... backups... online storage sites... and maybe even your closets and drawers for photos the accurately describe your world and how you pass through it. We aren't looking for staged shots or posed opportunities. This series is to document where you are and who you are in it. Your job. Your house. Your local bar. The park down the street. The highways and freeways that you travel down every day. That place where you buy those things. All camera makes and types are welcomed - as long as it's primarily a camera... so please, no cellphone pics. Most of all, be honest... with yourself, and with the people who are voting. May the best photos win.
Finished (21 challenges)
Winners announced: 14th May, 2011 GMT
Winner: New York City Of Lights
This challenge is for your best photos of a sunset in a clearly urban setting. Photos should contain some item that identifies the setting as an urban location - a street lamp, city skyline, park bench, or whatnot. This is the last Colour & Shades challenge, so knock it out of the park :)
Winners announced: 7th May, 2011 GMT
Winner: Atmosphere (color)
This challenge is simple enough: submit your best photo of a single tree against a blue sky. There can be other trees in the background if necessary, but there has to be one single tree than dominates the scene.
Winners announced: 30th April, 2011 GMT
This challenge is for those of you who have taken photos of your local nature environments immediately after the winter snow has melted and before the plants and trees start to turn green for the summer sunshine. Please refrain from submitting pictures of plants in bloom since that would be a greening effect.
Winners announced: 23rd April, 2011 GMT
The concept for this challenge is fairly simple: submit your best pictures of a firetruck. It can be at the scene of a fire... sitting at the fire station... in a parade... or hitting the drive-thru window. Whatever it is, the firetruck MUST be the central focus of the photo.
Winners announced: 12th March, 2011 GMT
Winner: 15 MPH Curve
This challenge is open strictly to signs installed along the road and streets of where you live by your local municipality/public works department. Stop signs, street name signs, speed limit signs, school crossing signs - whatever it is, the sign can not be advertising a private company or institution.
Winners announced: 5th March, 2011 GMT
This challenge is fairly straightforward: submit your best photo of real life fog. Whether it be downtown London, a coastal town in Maine, on the way up a mountain, or the Golden Gate Bridge in fog thick as pea soup... you have to be able to see the fog and it's effects in your picture.
Winners announced: 26th February, 2011 GMT
Winner: DSC05716 copy
This challenge is for all the photos you have taken of your local, state, or national police forces and their associated gear. From police officers to police cars - your qualifying picture should contain an easily discernible theme about the men and women of law enforcement.
Winners announced: 19th February, 2011 GMT
Winner: Storm over the Harbor
This challenge is pretty simple: show us the menace and the beauty of Mother Nature getting ready to unleash bad weather. Storm clouds, funnel clouds, hurricanes, or torrential rains viewed from afar - just make sure your photo isn't from INSIDE dangerous weather as we don't encourage that sort of recklessness.
Winners announced: 12th February, 2011 GMT
This challenge is to celebrate that iconic, unmistakable soft drink Coca-Cola and all the ways it effects our daily lives. From advertisements, billboards, collections, what we eat, to the trash that people throw on the ground. Whatever your photo is of, it has to have a Coke product or emblem somewhere in the shot.
Winners announced: 1st January, 2011 GMT
Winner: Grillin' In The Rain
Even though a lot of us are heading into the cold and ice of winter, it's time to look back at those days where we spent lazy afternoons and evenings gathered around our grills and BBQs - breathing in the aromas of meat and vegetables cooking to perfection. This challenge is for those of you mindful enough to take pics of the process!
Winners announced: 25th December, 2010 GMT
Winner: Olds 88
READ CAREFULLY: This is another automobile challenge - this time dedicated strictly to cars and trucks manufactured by General Motors (GM). However, there is a catch: vehicles must be from a discontinued GM brand - Hummer, Pontiac, Saturn, Oldsmobile.
Winners announced: 18th December, 2010 GMT
Winner: Christmas Candy
READ CAREFULLY: This challenge is all about the November-December holiday season: Christmas, U.S. Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or whatever else holiday that you and yours celebrate at this time of year - but the photo *MUST* have a holiday theme/subject. Happy Holidays Everyone! :)
Winners announced: 11th December, 2010 GMT
Winner: Leeds Mattress Store
This challenge follows the current 'OPEN' sign trend on DPR - except with my own Colour & Shades twist: all photos must have a neon or LED lit 'open' sign somewhere in them. The type of store isn't specific... can be Walmart, KFC, or Mom & Pop's Variety - as long as it has the required OPEN sign present. Now get shopping!
Winners announced: 4th December, 2010 GMT
Winner: The Pumpkin King
This challenge is about the sights and colours of Halloween - pumpkins, candy, costumes, and the dark of night. Did you go along with your kids? Did you decorate your house? Did you take pics of kids coming to your door? Show us what Halloween is all about. Now that it's been a few weeks since Halloween, we're sure that you're recovered from the little ghouls and goblins that terrorized you.
Winners announced: 27th November, 2010 GMT
Winner: The autumn flow
This challenge is to show off those pics you have of all the fabulous autumn colours that come to the deciduous trees when summer changes to fall. This is another nature related challenge, so get outdoors and show us what colour the leaves are where you live.
Winners announced: 20th November, 2010 GMT
Winner: The homeland.
O Canada! This challenge is for all you Canucks out there or for those of you who have visited our great land. Submit your photo here if it has clearly Canadian content - the Canadian flag. Photos can be of anything you like - but the flag must be in it somewhere naturally - no composites. Good luck, eh?!
Winners announced: 13th November, 2010 GMT
Winner: Nespresso Coffee Bar in Montreal
This challenge is to depict the restaurants where you eat that you enjoy: fast food, sit down, fancy, take-out - whatever it is, it MUST have the colours red or yellow in the photo. This may seem to favor McDonald's, but many eateries use this colour scheme, so it shouldn't be too hard to find diversity and options. Bon appetit!
Winners announced: 9th October, 2010 GMT
This challenge is for all you petrol heads and grease monkeys - a chance to show off your vision of sex on wheels. Fast cars, old cars, big trucks, ricers, tuners... whatever auto makes your heart pound and your shutter click - that's what goes here.
Winners announced: 2nd October, 2010 GMT
Winner: Milky Way
This challenge is all about the things above this world of ours - the skies, the clouds, the heavens, the moon, and the stars. All of you out there who are drawn to look up are invited to submit your best photo of the sky and anything in it - can be a wide angle landscape, or it can be an extreme telephoto shot of the moon. It can be a bird... it can be a plane... it can be Superman if...
Winners announced: 25th September, 2010 GMT
Winner: no winner
This challenge is to show your city from unusual or uncommon angles. Instead of the landmark parks, towers, or museums, show us those things that matter to you that aren't normally shown when promoting your city. It could be a restaurant, a boat dock, the back of a warehouse, the local sewage treatment plant - whatever it is, it has to be something that would not be normally associated...
Winners announced: 18th September, 2010 GMT
Winner: 7DJonker PANO 2
This challenge is for those of you who get out of the house... and get into the natural world, wherever it may be. The forest... the park... your backyard - wherever the world created by humans ends, and the world that was before us starts. Please refrain from submitting shots of pets or other domestic animals as they are no longer part of the natural order of things. Good luck!
