Finished (21 challenges)
Winners announced: 28th February, 2020 GMT
Show an animal companion along with it's human. GET CLOSE. Don't show somebody walking their dog and taking up only about 25% of the frame. Fill the frame with the animal and its human, eliminate as much background as possible. IF YOU SUBMIT A PHOTO WITH PEOPLE TAKING UP ONLY A SMALL PORTION OF THE IMAGE AND LOTS OF IRRELEVANT BACKGROUND THE IMAGE DOES NOT FIT THE REQUIREMENTS AND MOST...
20. Low angle shots
Winners announced: 21st February, 2020 GMT
Winner: no winner
Whatever subject you like, just as long as the camera was positioned NO MORE THAN ONE FOOT from the ground when the image was made. Nobody's going to measure anything, but if it APPEARS TO ME that the camera was more than one foot above the ground I'll probably DQ the image. That means that there pretty much HAS to be something visible in the image which would indicate the height of the camera.
19. Tight Crop
Winners announced: 14th February, 2020 GMT
Winner: Great Gray Owl Photographed in the Wild
Any subject your heart desires, just as long as there is NO BACKGROUND. For purposes of this challenge, NO BACKGROUND is not the same as a completely black or white textureless background. Get close or crop hard. We want to see ONLY the subject. Please see example.
Winners announced: 7th February, 2020 GMT
Winner: action jump
I need photos from ANY sort competition involving a rider actually sitting on a nag and competing in ANY sort of competitive event. Don't have to be running or jumping. It there's such a thing as a hay eating competition it qualifies.
17. Racing Season
Winners announced: 31st January, 2020 GMT
Winner: '19 IMSA-189V2
I need photos of racing vehicles actually engaged in competition at the moment of image capture. This means they need to be actually moving. It's a REQUIREMENT THAT A VEHICLE COMPLETELY FILL THE FRAME IN ONE DIRECTION OR THE OTHER. There can certainly be other stuff in the image, but if the framing is not tight enough for one vehicle to stretch from one edge of the frame to the other it...
16. Smoking Trains
Winners announced: 24th January, 2020 GMT
Winner: C&T Aug 2015-076
Another challenge suggested by one of the active Challenge Forum members, with a bit of a twist, is a request for images of trains, but for purposes of this challenge it's a requirement that the locomotive be PRODUCING SMOKE WHEN PHOTOGRAPHED. Beyond that requirement we'll leave it up to you.
Winners announced: 17th January, 2020 GMT
Winner: Tractor with a Goat
JahnG submitted this idea for a challenge, and I have made a couple of changes to suit my own (questionable :) ) personal taste. Thanx Jahn. For this challenge please submit images of OLD STANDARD TRACTORS, ie. 70 years or older tractors, such that you can see that they are quite old, and not looking like more modern tractors. Running or not. Whole or in pieces. For purposes of this...
14. Beyond the Door
Winners announced: 10th January, 2020 GMT
Winner: View from room, Thorung High Camp
Mike Engles suggested this challenge idea in the Forum and I stole it :) It's not my idea, I had no creative input, I was just the first thief to the keyboard :) I need a photograph of a door, but the door needs to be at least partially open so as to reveal SOMETHING beyond the door. Something INTERESTING. The INTERESTING beyond the door can be something of beauty, something of...
Winners announced: 13th December, 2019 GMT
Winner: Silhouetted boab
This may blow up on me, but I'm going to try something different. Load up TWO different processed versions of the same image. ANY subject. Make the processing of each image significantly different from each other, nothing subtle. Votes will be cast by voting either a .5 or a full 5 indicating which of the two versions they prefer. DON'T use any of the intermediate vote values. I have no...
Winners announced: 22nd November, 2019 GMT
Old Iron, in this context, is in reference to the term used by some California hot rod types regarding old automobiles. But I am requesting CLOSEUPS OF SPECIFIC PARTS of an old automobile. If the entire vehicle, or for that matter anything bigger than about 12 inches square, appears in the image it does not qualify for this challenge. Rusted or shiny, painted or plated, broken or...
Winners announced: 1st November, 2019 GMT
Winner: Not For Sale
This is not a landscape challenge. The subject should be a piece of old industrial equipment/rusted junk/worn out tool/rusted farm junk or cast off piece of trash previously used in agriculture or manufacturing. NO AUTOMOBILES, that's a different challenge. A farm tractor or forklift would be acceptable, but not a junk car.
10. Got Gargoyle ?
Winners announced: 6th September, 2019 GMT
Winner: A Formidable Sentinel
The example of course is not a gargoyle, but all these old structures have carvings, statues, busts, and various thingies carved on the outside, inside, and on various crypts and burial devices. We're looking for CLOSEUPS of the most ornate, outrageous, complex, strange, or downright weird you can find, but they must be of people or creatures. Not just Gargoyle's, but any real or fanciful...
9. In or Out ?
Winners announced: 30th August, 2019 GMT
Winner: Which Way To Go?
A favorite subject of new photographers, and those of us (ahem) who have never been able to shake the fascination, is the appearance of all the tiny curious looking doors and windows in ancient structures. Where do all these things actually lead? What secrets do they conceal? Probably a broom closet or apartment house for pigeons, but they're still interesting looking and we want to see...
8. Light 'em Up
Winners announced: 23rd August, 2019 GMT
Winner: Pont du Gard
Light shows projected on the façade's of Ancient Cathedrals, Chapels, and Places of Worship has gotten to be kind of a thing. Some are really elaborate and extensive. Let's see your take on the light shows projected on some of these ancient structures. Interpret "ancient" to mean a century or so.
Winners announced: 16th August, 2019 GMT
Winner: Older than the Hills
No this is not about Air America :) Someone recently posted about challenges being excessively restrictive and rule bound, so as requested we're going to try to alleviate this. For this challenge I want to see your BEST PHOTO OF ANY OLD STRUCTURE. Anything from the Taj Mahal to the tumble down tool shed in your backyard, all we're looking for is GOOD PHOTOGRAPHS. Let's see your absolute...
Winners announced: 9th August, 2019 GMT
Winner: Stayin alive
We're looking for CREEPY color or B & W images from the burying place generally associated with ancient cathedrals, castles and OLD locations. Inside, outside, in the basement, in the attic, wherever. The example I've posted below isn't even associated with any cathedral or such like place, and that's fine if it's CREEPY. Any place of burial is acceptable, as long as we can reasonably look...

We're looking for color or B & W images of interior or exterior ARCHITECTURAL OR STRUCTURAL DETAILS in Ancient Cathedrals, Chapels, and Places of Worship. For this challenge, we are interested in closeups of specific details of the structure, carvings, statuary, that variety of stuff. For guidance on size of the subject, think nothing larger than perhaps the large double doors leading into...
Winners announced: 26th July, 2019 GMT
Winner: The Beautiful Stained Glass Windows at St. Chapelle Cathedral, Paris
We're looking for color or B & W interior or exterior images of stained glass in Ancient Cathedrals, Chapels, and Places of Worship. For this challenge, we are interested in any views, closeups of specific details or wider. If the image makes one think "ancient", then that's good enough, don't worry about the actual age, I don't want to rule out everything in the US :) Please also avoid...
Winners announced: 19th July, 2019 GMT
Winner: Notre Dame des sept douleurs, Montreal
We're looking for interior images with ANY processing showing the interior of these structures. If the image makes one think "ancient", then that's good enough, don't worry about the actual age, I don't want to rule out everything in the US :) \

We're looking for B & W images showing any aspect of the EXTERIOR of these wonderful old structures. For this challenge, we are interested in wide views, NOT closeups of specific details. If the image makes one think "ancient", then that's good enough, don't worry about the actual age. Some of the best examples have had the town build up very closely around them, sometimes to the extent...
