Ugliness in Nature

Challenge #198 in the Life in the Natural World series. Hosted by RuthC.
Challenge has finished
Yes, I know that this is a human, subjective view of the world, that we see aspects of nature as beautiful or ugly, and not as the animals, birds, insects, plants see themselves. Given that proviso, show us what you consider really, really ugly in nature. Man-made ugliness will be disqualified, and no people, or domestic pets. Macro and close-ups welcome. Size of entry: 1,600 pixels on the longer side. And no, DPR does NOT reduce the sizes of the entries for you. You need to do this yourself or be disqualified!

This plant is a Gunnera species, with very large, spiny leaves, more unwelcome spines along its stems, and an untidy appearance. Why would anyone choose to grow it in their garden?
