Built in the 6th century, at the height of the East Roman Empire, the Cistern Basilica is 70x140m with a dome supported by 336 marble columns each 9m tall. A 4m thick wall of brick and mortar makes it waterproof. The water it was designed to hold came from the Belgrad Forest, 19km away. Since 1987, tourists have been able to walk through the cistern along passages raised above the current water level.
