Nature's Graffiti

Challenge #176 in the Life in the Natural World series. Hosted by RuthC.
Challenge has finished
Before humans left their marks on walls and buildings, nature was already demonstrating graffiti in interesting places. Show us some examples of this. It may be carvings by beetles under tree bark, snail trails, leaves with wandering paths beneath their surfaces caused by tiny insects, tidal marks in the beach sand... Please, no graffiti or markings made by humans or domestic pets, and minimal evidence of man or man-made structures. Macro and close-ups welcome. Size of entry: 1,600 pixels on the longer side.
