Should you ever find yourself lost at night in a dark sky, there is one sure way to find North. Polaris, the North Star, can be seen in this picture shining like an anchor light atop the mast, holding position in the sky while the Earth continue to turn for this nearly 9-minute exposure. City light generates the orange glow, but the green in the sky is “airglow”. Airglow is a weak emission of green light in the upper atmosphere when Nitrogen and Oxygen combine and should not be confused with an aurora.
