Neurons (nerve cells) in the cerebral cortex (brain) of a six day old rat. The neurons are stained with a red fluorescent dye (DiI, pronounced "dye eye"). The cell body is the large round/triangular shape in the middle layer of the picture. The thick apical dendrites extend upward (top of picture). The thin process projecting down from the cell body is the axon. The blue background has been stained with the nuclear (DNA) stain bisbenzimide. Multiple exposure with rhodamine (red) and ultraviolet (blue) filters. Nikon microscope.
