The Italian artist Fosco Maraini spent most of his life on a variety of journeys; It was in July 1954 that he decided to carry out an ethnographic documentary, with photographic reportage, and a book describing the everyday life and activity of the women of Hegura, Japan. These fisherwomen, whose fishing practice consisted in diving up to 20 meters deep to collect the mollusks necessary for their villages’ sustainment, had ever since fascinated many of the westerners traveling to Japan. With his analytical accuracy and his gift of capturing that “one moment”, Maraini produced a suggestive series of photographs, capturing the various stages and activities of the diver women’s work, lives, stories and culture
