Aurel Vlaicu was a Romanian engineer, airplane constructor and early pilot. Vlaicu built his firs powered airplane "Vlaicu Nr. I" and flew with it for the first time on June 17, 1910. He died on September 13, 1913 crashing at Banesti, while attempting to be the first to cross the Carpathian Mountains in flight onboard his Vlaicu II airplane.
