I found this odd, as I can't understand how a country's national flag can be "a symbol of freedom".

What is your county's symbol of freedom?

The point is that anybody (except maybe people from North Korea and a few other such places) can take a photo of their flag and claim it is a symbol of freedom. There is nothing special about a country's flag that denotes freedom.
