Capture your subject looking at us, the viewers. I'm not sure what you can get for an emotional look from an insect, pet or wild animal but you should be able to get something that has the subjects eye's staring right into the lens plus, try to show us an interesting pose or facial expression on the non-human. (Humans may be in the photo, but they are not to be the main subject).
