This photo was taken in Friedrichshafen, Germany. Southern Germany celebrates a very unique form of Carnival called Fastnet, which to an American looks like Halloween on steroids. Costumes are all hand made, including the masks made of solid wood. Costumes differ from town to town and are amazingly imaginative and colorful. Two additional costumes can be seen within the frame, although they are not wearing their masks. During the parade, the groups will have chants and often bring the audience into the parade itself for participation (whether you like it or not), which usually consists of putting shredded leaves, hay or confetti into teenage girls' hair. This particular group of Hexen (witches) pole vaults to entertain the audience. When they yell to the audience "HUMPIS"! The audience yells back "AHOI"!!
