148th place (joint)
These are starling flocks over the sky of Rome (Italy) during Fall season. A starling is 15-20cm long. They sleep in the cities and feed in the countryside during day. It is amazing to think that in all these flocks (from tens of birds to 100.000 birds for 300-500m diameter) every element looks only at its first 7 neighbours. Only birds can express in such impressive way the power of collective behaviour.

Taken: Thursday, 21st December, 2006
Focal length: 35 mm
Shutter speed: 1/250 sec
Aperture: F4
ISO: 800
Notes: Exposure was very difficult. Birds perform this flocking behaviour during sunset. ISO needed to be pushed to 800 for having short exposure times. Sensor was not clean so I did retouch on two very small part on the sky. Exposure curve and colors where modified to have this romantic scene. Absolutely no PhotoShop or similar, I didn't touch anything of the birds! It's a real picture.
